Was here.
5 April 2009 1 Hiker Jason H, Hunter H, Ted W, Hayward W Gainesville, Ga 3 Days Pinhoti Trail
Hiked in on Sunday afternoon in the rain. It was hard to get the campfire going but with teamwork it came together. It was very foggy here last night until midnight when a cold front came through and cleared everything out. Headed to Cave Creek Trail for another cold night. I could not ask for better company...
Matt 4:19 Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.
19 April 2009 ? Hikers ATΩ Tennessee Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Headed up the Pinhoti Trail and stopped in the shelter last night. Really cold. Headed back to Tennessee today. Oh well, great time these past two days.

Eaten by rodents ~~~
Been camped here at the shelter for 2 days now. Just enjoying nature and the mountains! The weather has been beautiful, so different from the flatlands of Florida! Can't wait until next year and come back to conquer more of the trail. It's a nice little practice ~~ for the for the AT! I hope this place ~~ much peace to you as it ~~

Domo was here!
29 April 2009 1 Hiker Jessica, Chris - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
We live not far from here. Decided we wanted to go camping and we knew there was a shelter on this trail. We just were not sure how far it was. We overpacked and had to set up camp a ways back. This is so beautiful here and we will be back soon with less gear.
PS We couldn't ask for better weather!
5 May 2009 1 Hiker Bob W / Wojo Gainesville, Fl Day Pinhoti Trail
In for the night from Double Spring Cross. Started Sunday the 3rd from Bull Gap. Thru hikinng the Pinhoti to Cave Spring, Ga. Couldn't have picked a worse week weather wise. Lots of rain, tornadic activity the last two nights. Those sirens! Just had to keep trudging on in the rain & hunker down under the tarp at night so far. Thankful for this first shelter. 80-90% chance of rain again tomorrow, so will likely take a zero day here. Need to rest & heal the feet anyhow as wet socks and shoes = BLISTERS Ouch! Have one more night of tarp sheltering this trip, so would rather wait for drier days. This is what learning patience is about I guess. Have annual leave thru the 13th so won't start to panic until then. For now, plenty of reading material, compact raido, & "Mango Margarita" to sustain me! Hiking solo because my hiking buddy is doing a tour in Iraq. Suck to be him. That's all for now. May write more if I get bored hanging out in this shelter. No one else at the shelter.
11 May 2009 1 Hiker Krazy K Knox TV Day Pinhoti Trail
Monday - 5 - 11 - 09 (I think.)
Mother's day was yesterday the 10th, right? Or Sunday? Been nice & wet so far. Some rains, some rocks, some sunshine...
I'm beat from hiking 17.5 miles in the rain, partially & all those rocks & sleeping in the rain on unflat ground!
Alas, a shelter. I scared the bird camping out / resting in it. I swept. It's looking good. ☺
Anyways, final destination is Cave Springs, Ga. We shall see. ☺
Enjoy the Pinhoti, southern AT Section.
14 May 2009 1 Hiker John C - Many Pinhoti Trail
Boy was I glad to see this shelter! It's been wet the past two days and I needed to dry off. Just wish there was a water source nearby...
The trail's been good so far. Today was by far the nicest hike. Good weather & great scenery. I love being out in the midst of all God has created. Gives me both a sense of perspective and purpose.
24 May 2009 1 Hiker Dylan H - Many Pinhoti Trail
It's been raining for two days straight, and it doesn't look like dry weather is around the corner. I wanted to go from Porter's Gap to Cave Springs, Georgia, in 6 days, but I wasn't prepared for the jagged boulders of despair that litter most of the trail. So the hiking has been slow... Did 18 miles yesterday, which puts me at 7 miles so far today. After seeing this gorgeous shelter, I may decide to stay the night. It's only 10:00am, so that wouldn't be very efficient. I guess I will take a long break here, eat some lunch, and sweep this puppy out before getting back on the Pinhoti. Maybe my trail name sould be Rainman, because it's supposed to rain the rest of the week, & because I'm retarded for hiking in it.
24 May 2009 2 Hikers Roselyn, Alonzo C - Day Pinhoti Trail
As a person that truly loves the outdoors I have been very reserved for many years because being safe has been, and is a big concern. However, today, I had the opportunity to get out and spend the past couple days with my husband and great friends. I truly love my stay here and plan on visiting again really soon.
31 May 2009 2 Hikers Chaco & Toesocks - Many Pinhoti, Appalchian, Vermont Long Trails
Chaco & Toesocks On our way to the AT in New York. Toesocks broke her leg in New York on last year's AT NOBO. We are going back to finish the 815 miles we lack. Then we are headed to Vermont's Long Trail. Go Huge! You gotta believe!
1 June 2009 2 Hikers Thor, Planet 3 - Day Pinhoti Trail
Come through on a long day hike. Remainder illegible.
4 June 2009 5 Hikers Special K, Emily, Sandra L, Skylar, Dooley - Day Pinhoti Trail
Night fell before our hike even began. We started the trail adorned with headlamps and rain jackets on as the rain has been almost non stop. A small detour on the trail had us belly crawling up the side of the mountain by the creek. The shelter was great: No mice, no bugs, no scary noises like others have heard. We're back to trail this morning with the rain by our side yet again. Our ceremonial beer awaits us at the trailhead. But first off to Chinnabee Falls for some swimming!
[Rock On!]
6 June 2009 1 Hiker Bearpaw - Many Pinhoti Trail
Bearpaw In and surprised there is no one here on a Saturday evening. Enjoying the quiet and comfort of my hammock combined with the convenience of a picnic table. Ambling from 431 to Porter's Gap while recovering from a 3 month fight with bronchitis. So far, so go with mellow 10 mile days planned. Tomorrow, a side trip to Cheaha Mountain & then south to Porter's Gap by Tuesday morning. Weather is humid, but the worst of the heat has yet to hit. Best to all. 'Til then... Ambling on.
PS Many thanks to the builders & Maintainers of the Pinhoti Trail. Your hard work (Especially side hill cuts) are very much appreciated.
20 June 2009 1 Hiker Cherkee Yomjimbo, MAC - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Come out to check the streams. Hiked down from Bald Rock 9pm on 19 June 2009. Just an overnighter to escape the house. Streams are really low. We are thankful we dragged a gallon of water with us.

25 July 2009 2 Hikers Tyler & Corndogs - Day Pinhoti Trail
4:49pm. Came this way via Death Valley, Ca. I've hiked trails North, east, south, & west and I hope to always hike and find places like this until my last breath leaves my body. Run, dance, laugh, yell, scream and live so much of your life that when death comes, there's nothing for him to take.

9 August 2009 1 Hiker Faith S Mobile, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
Pinhoti is GROOVY! ☺ I'm regretting that I didn't bring more that a bottle of water, cosidering that the streams are dry. But this is a truly beautiful place. I'm so glad to be in the mountains! And to be spending time with my sister. To whowever this may concern, read 'Pinhoti Section 6'; it's very entertaining!)
27 August 2009 4 Hikers THE MEANDERTHALS: Don & Jean - Day Pinhoti Trail
Meanderthals 4 old hoofers back on the trail for a week. Old bones creak a bit, but still get us there. This trail has "eroded" some in the past 20 years. It was much flatter then.
Water is scarce, but found a trickle at Turnipseed Crossing and near here. It may be better at lower elevation. See you at ALDHA.
29 August 2009 ? Hikers F: Davis' Birmingham, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
Just passing through with our Chessie W?.
30 August 2009 2 Hikers Lauren P, D - Day Pinhoti Trail
Just coming up here to clear my head. I used to do it every day & it really helped but as I started college (I'm going to school to be an RN.) I get more involved in that and less involved with taking time to think. I'm going 2 do this more, tho. I have a lot of confusing stuff going on & need my time with peace & God. So if you read this pray 4 me & stop 2 take time 4 your busy life & enjoy what God made.
30 August 2009 2 Hikers D, Lauren - Day Pinhoti Trail
Decided to come up here today with my friend Lauren. Great idea when it's raining. Love to come up here and listen to the rain.
Both of us kinda dealing with some stuff. It's nice to just get back to the basics. And mucho props to whoever came up with the concept of leaving notebooks up here for reflection.
Well, I hope you're all enjouying this great gift we have out here. Even Jesus needed to go to the wilderness. God bless ya.
4 September 2009 2 Hikers F: Michelle G, Tim Woodland, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
What had started out as a weekend retreat away from my life all alone. I ended up bringing my son Tim. My oldest of 4. My life has been pretty crazy. Y 40 year old husband left me for no real reason for a 20 year old littel girl. I am hoping to walk off a lot of my pain this weekend. Thank God for giving me these paths to walk and for walking with me.
5 September 2009 1 Hiker Eric F / TATER - Day Pinhoti Trail
The air is cool tonight atop Blue Mountain. This shelter is nice. I have heard much about the Pinhoti. Not only from my travels but also from my studies. I am an AT thru hiker in planning. GAME2010. So in some shake down hikes ended up in the Sipsey Wilderness. Got hopelessly lost. No trail markings and poor maintenance (Due in part to restrictions.) So a 4 day planned loop got shot. So instead of going home crying here I sit. It's raining and the rain makes a funny noise as it impacts the ceda shaked roof. The boy scouts celebrate 100 years next year. The next time you see a scout tell him thanks. The scouts do a lot of trail maintenance which goes unnoticed.
To the scouts thak you!
In memory of the 4 scouts at Little Sioux.
7 September 2009 2 Hikers John, Karen - Day Pinhoti Trail
Monday. Hiked from Bald Rock. Beautiful day. Sunshine, blue skies & a nice breeze. Just spending thi sLabor Day outdoors. We are leaving a camping can opener for others who visit the shelter. Happy trails!
14 September 2009 2 Hikers - - Day Pinhoti Trail
Monday. Two novices from Fort Payne hiked up from the gates, overcast most of the day, but extremely humid, which made starting our fire very difficult. haha
The frequent showers nearly ruined our hobo dinner, but were able to get enough coals to finish the job. However, no fire tonight, I suspect. I hope the lantern does not run out, because I heard there were yetis in these woods!
17 September 2009 3 Hikers Lindsay, Josh, Jay - Day Pinhoti Trail
Thursday. Came down from Bald Rock in the fog, late in the evening. Totally creepy, couldn't see 5 feet in front of us! Finally found the trail markers to find our way to the shelter, only to find it trashed - food left behind to rot - nasty! Planning on spending another 8 days on the trail in all. Hope the weather clears soon.
Friday 18 September 2009. Decided to spend another day at the shelter to relax before heading on! Day is sunny! Leaving tomorrow!
Saturday 19 September 2009. Why is it still raining?? Why didn't we leave when we had the chance? It's been raining all night. Looking for a break in the weather to move on.
Feeling sorry on the Pinhoti!!

Hiking while I got some time off from the "Rat Race." Started at Pinhoti on Highway 431 at Forest Service Road # 585. Hike in Monday afternoon to second campsite. Got tent set up & started on tarp just as it started raining. Got up Tuesday 15 December 2009 and hiked to this shelter. Lay over extra day to dry boots that took a dunking in a hard flooding river after the rain. Had a fire all day today here. It's been nice to just relax and enjoy the sun coming up and my fire. Will head to Cheaha Mountain tomorrow & go to McDill Point, down to High Falls, then back up the trail to the store and back home. Short but sweet! & time well spent away. Hike On!

5 January 2010 3 Hikers Crazy 8 Toes, Matt, Joe - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Damn cold night here at the shelter. Thermometer read -2°F. Any water left out for over 2 minutes froze immediatly. Stayed warm despite how poofing cold it was. I think I know what they mean about this place being haunted. But those noises could have been from Matt and Joe farting and snoring. Well, off to Maine. Freaking beast of a hiker.
13 January 2010 ? Hikers Southern Trekking Boys - ? Days Pinhoti Trail
Got in late tonight as sun was setting. Managed to get a fire and stay warm. Warmest night since we have been out. Hiking out to Cheaha today. Happy Trails
17 January 2010 3 Hikers Dylan, Caneron, Rachel - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Stayed here. It rained and an opaque mist enclosed our camp. As the day ended our view was reduced to bluish grey sihouettes of trees and phantasmagorical shadow from the light of the fire. We had cous-cous for dinner and a mouse crawled through Camerons hair, while she was sleeping.

"Starving"
A Short Story by E Janda

As I ran through the woods, my right leg aching, colors flashing past, I finally came to a dead stop when I tripped over a root. My heart beating so hard in my chest; I could hardly breathe.
I laid there on my face for several minutes until I had the energy to lift myself into a seated position. Still breathing hard, I felt as though I might pass out from exhaustion. I heard an animal in the distance, a bird, perhaps a hawk, flying high above me, though I could not see it.
As I calmed and my heart returned to its normal rythmn, I took the opportunity to examine myself. My right ankle was incredibly swollen and throbbed with pain. I had several cuts on my hands, and I could still feel the sting from the fresh cut on my cheek. I was drenched in sweat, which attracted dirt. I smelled horrible and couldn't remember how long I'd been lost in these woods, struggling to find the way home.
A cool breeze swept through the trees, rustling the leaves and chilling my wet skin. I shivered and folded my arms trying to warm my body and spirit. But it was of no use. For I knew that I couldn't continue in this way with no gear, food, or water.
This was not in my plans, getting lost. It was only supposed to be a simple day of hiking in the wilderness. I thought it'd be good for me to get out into nature, feel it, and experience it. How foolish.
I wondered if anyone was looking for me right now. Would they even be able to find me. I had no idea where I was and had certainly travelled far from any trail. Perhaps this is how my stiry would end. Lost in a National Forest, never to be found.
After a while I must have drifted off to sleep from exhaustion because I awoke to an orange and purple sky, a sign of the setting sun. My entire body completely stiff and cold. I hadn't even the energy to lift my head from the tree I leaned upon. I couldn't speak, for my mouth and throat were drier than a desert. Even my humnger paigns had subsided. I felt strangely at ease, for the first time in days. My mind wasn't frantic and my heart wasn't heavy. I felt peaceful. Finally I gave into the sleepiness that had come over me, and I closed my eyes as the sun slipped below the horizon.

17 March 2010 5 Hikers Brooks / Slip, Slide, thru, dog, Moondoggie♡, Rocket Man - Many Pinhoti Trail
Blessed to have such great weather - 43° tonight, 68° tomorrow. I'm here with my son Brooks 15 / Slip, and nephew 18 Slide, and two thru hikers Thru and her dog. She has thru hiked the PCT, CDT, & AT, where she met the guy who is hiking the Pinhoti with her. He's old enoughto be her dad. I learned a lot talking to them as I will thru hike the AT in 2011! Retired last year at 50. Rock on and Thank You Jesus! We started a couple of days ago in 34° snow, sleet, then rain from Adams Gap, down the Skyway Loop, Lake Trail around Chinnabee, then up to Cheaha Shelter for the night. Next day, to Pinhoti, to here. Tomorrow we will go back down Pinhoti to Cave Creek, Odum Scout, then Pinhoti again to Adams. Oh yeah, my knees can't wait to hike DOWN the Stairway to Heaven!
Did I mention this shelter is supposed to be haunted! I will Google the story, maybe. My food bag was opened during the night!!! Nothing's missing.
"The hike is short, leave no regrets!" "Pack it out"

Needed to et out for a while. All the friends I used to camp with live far enough away that a trip is tough to plan.
So the dog & I made a day trip. I should get everyone together; it's been too long. Beauregard will be a happy, tired damned dog by the time I get us back, ha!
Clear sky after a rainy week. Warm with a slow, cool breeze. Spring lets her skirts ride up a bit.
