This shelter was built by the volunteers of hiking trails groups here in Alabama for your enjoyment. Alabama Trails Association acquired the funds and transported the shelter to the site. Was here scouting for tronslls hike from Wisconsin to FLORIDA. My web page would be probably ZAKHIKE or HikingFORPEACE. Build more wonderful shelters like this and you ~ with the around like they have on the AT. I hiked AT for years. It's getting worse every year. They even have some type of hiker's police. They are called ridge runners. Most of them are polite, some are not. Think about this while developing this trail. OVERCROWDED SHELTERS, HOSTELS ADVERTISING, CRIME, GARBAGE, LAND SPECULATORS, MORMONS AND OTHER JESUS FREAKS. Tirst ??? ??? swallow trails of μlands, 76°F beautiful day. So long / Evergreens /

Me here with Philys E and son Anthony. Left ATA picnic about 2:45. Got here little after five. Great shelter. John Calhoun drove my car back to Birmingham. Me and him stayed at Lower Shoal Shelter last night. My last cigarette was this morning in the parking lot at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant where we had a great breakfast. Maybe John Calhoun will meet us at Blue Mountain or something. The food was good at the ATA picnic. This is my first Pinhoti through hike. I call it cold turkey on the turkey Trail. I will soon clean out the fire ring at Lower Creek Shoal Shelter because it really needs it. Me and John belong to the Appalachian Trail Club of Alabama. Howard G Pres, O Kenny Veep. Happy trails

Leaving for Terrapin Creek in a minute. Slept great on the picnic table. ? I checked my khaki pants 'cause there was a scorpion in there (Palumnersus). Davis Mountain Shelter is tops. Oh well, goni' south. My stove worked great last night after I replaced an "O" Ring. I wish the ATC of Alabama could be here now. Ricky L from Birmingham. (I only got lost 2 or 3 times to get here from Salem Church Road - but got here just the same. I think getting lost some is part of the adventure but there are many who would beg to differ and jump up and down complaining about way too few blazes to mark the trail- Later again Ricky L trail name -Waffle-

7-8 October 2005. Started at 278 Trailhead @ 1:00pm and arrived about 3:08pm. Weather conditions rain and fog with temps dropping remainder of evening. Excellent overnight hike but no fire. Great shelter and many thanks to all involved in its installation. Now at 6:38 pm we managed to make supper and fire but rain started again. First time in this section and plan to hike through when time permits. Once again thanks to all for making this possible. Happy Trails.

Stayed @ tent platform in Hawkins' Hollow - very, very nice! Great place to camp - Caution - I didn't get a lot of sleep due to animal visitations all night! Heard pack of coyotes& also heard bobcat or mountain lion - Left rather large cat tracks! Hiked to Pitts 2 at Indian Mountain, but decided to come back. Only resting here this afternoon. This shelter looks like it would be a terrific place to camp - will come back some time!

This is the only section of the Pinhoti that I haven't hiked. Me and my 12 year old daughter is making this section and we will really enjoy the shelter. It's sunny & 65° with a good breeze. We are looking forward to the night.
27 December 2005 1 Hiker GREENMAN Anniston, Al Many Pinhoti Trail
This is a nice shelter! This section finishes me up to Chandler Gap. Hoping the Pinhoti eventually hooks up to the Conecuh Trail and F. T. Up to about 2700 miles of the ECT now, and will be doing Cali. this year to finish the PCT. I can't get enough! Everyone passing through enjoy the Pinhoti. So many awesome spots you won't wanna do a whole lot of miles a day! Dugger will kick your ass so don't think these foothills won't offer a challenge.
4 March 2006 2 Hikers David & Jody P Gadsden, Al Many Pinhoti Trail
60° and a sunlite day. A great job on the shelter and the trail. This section will put us almost doing the hole of the Pinhoti. Have a great day. God is Good.

Nice shelter! I like the stools! I did the "regular" Pinhoti in April '03. It was the first long distance hike after back surgery 4 months before, so this trail has a special place. Went to Ga Border & back to finish this section. Good warm up for some hiking in the Black Mountains in the next few days. Perfect Indian Summer days. I hope it will hold for a few more days.

24 October 2006 1 Hiker Book Burner - 9 Days Pinhoti Trail
Finishing up my NOBO thruhike tomorrow at the Ga Border. What a journey - - 136 miles, 8 days, 10 turkeys, 5 deer, 1 snake, 3 days of rain (Maybe 4 - we'll see tomorrow), 4 gorgeous days. Saw 2 other hikers SOBO, 16 candy bars, 12 pop tarts, 1 tree that almost fell on me, 64 liters of creek water, 38 stunning views, 2 good books, 2 sore feet, and 1 heck of an adventure! Hike well, ignore the smell.

This shelter is great, looking forward to one more good night's rest out here. (Although it will be nice to sleep in my own bed tomorrow night!) Thanks to all who make these trails & shelters possible! email

Four of us hiking N→S starting this AM at Jackson Chapel Trailhead west of Cave Springs, Ga off Highway 411. Great hike until the logging south of Hurricane Creek, which continues to here. Markers almost completely obliterated, so use discretion before heading north. Two of us have hiked this stretch before, but I can't truthfully say that helped much. Be alert, hike happy!

Thursday, 10:39am. We started at 278 about an hour earlier. Cool breeze & sunshine with temperature about 80°F. Not bad for 2 in their mid 70s.

6 March 2008 3 Surveyors Larry Walker Land Surveying: Drew S / Crew Chief, Adam B, Andy W - Day Pinhoti Trail
Started this project 26 February 2008. My crew and I began surveying this part of the Pinhoti Trail from 278 to Salem Church Road to the Al _ Ga line. We started at Salem Church & went north to hunter's ridge. And now we have started at 278 and have reached the Davis Mountain Shelter. It has been quite an experience. Today the weather is close to 70°. We are close to finishing the day out. About ¾ mile is all we can traverse in a day. So if you see our points in the trail please do not disturb them. This section of trail from 278 to AL + GA Line will now be located & mapped to the exact locations based on GPS surveying & conventional methods. This shelter is very nice & a great spot for a break. To all hikers be safe & courteous.
8 March 2008 ? Hikers Troop 1 - Overnight Pinhoti Trail

Cool! I get to spend my last night on the Pinhoti at yet another awesome shelter. Thank you all again for all that you have done for all these sheleters & the trail. I really do appreciate it.
Today was rather difficult when it came to knowing what I should wear. It rained off & on & the temp kept going up & down. Pretty crazy. Stiil, God brought me through it all. Now I'm sitting at the picnic bench watching te sunset & also hearing thunder (I think.)
Will be reaching the end of my Bull Gap - Cave Springs, Ga trek. God willing, tomorrow. Boy, I really do smell bad.😋
May God bless you all in Christ. Take care.

It's so hot, I was able to wring sweat out of the shirt I am wearing. Even in Florida I was never able to do that. Wish I could stop and spend another night in a shelter (The chairs are a nice touch.) But alas, I have miles to do and the day is still young. Georgia, here I come!

Geocahing my way to Springer Mountain. I stayed at all the shelters between Bull Gap & here. All were good, some better. Shelters near water have no cell service and the morning always starts with a climb.Shelters like this one have a view and great sun in the morning. None of the shelters have it all.
17 April 2008 1 Hiker Bill W / MoBill Gadsden, Al Woodstock, Ga Many Pinhoti Trail
Beautiful sunset! + a full moon tonight☺
Beautiful day and it must have been 80. This is my last shelter night & then on to finish my Bull Gap to Ga hike.
Native azaleas, dogwood, sweet shrub everywhere you look. Stop and look around, don't just do the miles. Great shelter! Wish I had a steak to grill! Many thanks to all the volunteers for the Pinhoti. Saw ten hikers in 130 miles or so - half of those in Cheaha or Coleman. Let's not tell anyone about this trail!
I've only had camping company in 2 shelters on my whole trip from Bull's Gap.
Wish Ms Bigfoot would visit, I'm lonely tonight.
28 April 2008 1 Hiker Brian / T-Back - Many Eastern Continental Trail
Monday. T-Back here on my way to Springer. I was involved in a rockslide near Cheaha SP and spent a month off the trail to recoup. I'm doing better now but having to take it easy on my back. The time off and reduced pace has cost me my ECT hike. My plan is to reach Springer and then fly to Maine to SOBO the AT. If all goaes as planned, I will return to finish the IAT when it warms up next year. This is a great shelter. It seems my only company for the night will be a small bird that has nested on the front, overhead beam. I was going to push farter today, but this shelter is just too nice to pass up. Thanks everyone, for all the hard work that made it possible. Good hiking. Walk by faith...

My last night on the Alabama Pinhoti! Easier day than I expected from Oakey Mtn Shelter. Tomorrow wraps up the 5 section hikes that have allowed me to hike the entire Pinhoti in Alabama. I am loving sitting at the picnic table with the late afternoon sun warming me. My thermometer reads 56, the highest of the trip so far.
Thanks to all who build and maintain the PT & its corridor. Maybe I'll be back around next year to hike GA!

The trip fulfils the core requirement for Camping Mint Badge, required for Eagle, and all these boys are hopeful of achieving that rank. So grateful to the trail Ass'n and all who keep this precious part of out heritage so beautifully. Praise the Lord and God Bless all who pass this way. John S, Scoutmaster

11:21. I am finishing my first 3 day hike with a more experienced friend Brian G / Journeyman. We have hiked from Highpoint to Spring Creek and are coming back. We would have gone much farther, but lost too much time on the rough confusing parts of the Pinhoti Trail. The blue blaze markers need to be refreshed. This spot was my favorite though. I learned a lot.
