Pinhoti Trail
Davis Mountain Shelter Log Book
2005 - 2013

This 8½ x 11" wire bound book has no covers. Pages are dogeared, torn, mildewed, and have bleeding of the printed lines, but readability is not bad. A separate torn partial page and cardboard back cover were probably part of this book and will be included below.

Upon pondering what we want out of our lives, we discovered that everyone is searching for happiness and the connections that fulfill that quest so, we embarked on a quest of our own. 👍 Thirsty and with water levels running low, we turned south and headed for the nearest water source. Canteen in one hand and iodine tablets in the other, we stumbled through the woods on an early morning misty jaunt. As we neared the babbling brook, bees buzzed behind the brush besought our broken bunch. Wilst we were whimpering away we swashed and squished in and out of trees weaving our way to safety, until suddenly the ground gave way to deep into a dark abyss, scampering to find our headlamps we felt a chill in the air and smelled the sweet scent of cinnemon and gravy. When our headlamps came on we were befuddled to discover that the walls were covered in DUNNN DUN DUNNNNNN prehistoric cave paintings. Some depicting this pursuit of happiness that we originally sought out to find. These images vividly portrayed the way that leads to happiness that lies within our hearts. Good luck finding it!!☺

The woods are being harvested and the hillside denuded as I write this. What a heartbreaker. Even as I write, there is a giant skidder working the ridge behind the shelter.
27 January 2007 1 Hiker Mr. Parkay - Day Pinhoti Trail
Sunny day today... a good day to finish up the Alabama Section of this Pinhoti hike. Guess I'll start the Georgia section tomorrow morning. I was happy to see the entries by POWERSTROKE and Grey Eagle from a few pages back. The both hiked the ECT Eastern Continental Trail last year... And I met them both on the Appalachian Trail section of their hike... while I was thru hiking too. Met another AT thru hiker yesterday at the last shelter. He's the only hiker I've seen so far on this trip. He gave us some cookies, which is cool since I was running out of food at the time. I'm all set now. I had a 1lb summer sauage in my food drop that I forgot all about. Awesome surprise!

We camped last night on the trail past Salem Church Road and today we hiked to this shelter. This is a very nice place. We have enjoyed it. I helped survey the trail and ever since I have enjoyed it and would like to come back.
Have a safe hike and watch for snakes.

My fiance took me camping over near Salem Church Road for a graduation trip. Cause we both love camping and the outdoors! I had never been here before. It is amazing. Geat view, keeps you in shape, and extremely fun. When we leave here we're going to find a creek. It's 9?° right now. Hope to come back soon!

13 September 2008 1 Hiker Edwin Martin Enterprise, Al Day Pinhoti Trail

I hiked solo from Terrapin Creek today and still have 10½ miles to go to get to the first road in Georgia, where I stashed my mountain bike for the ride back to below Piedmont at Burns Trailhead. It's hot here, especially where the trees are cut and sun shines on me!

Best thing about hiking this time of year is eating wild muscadine AND wild bunch grapes. There are places where I filled my pockets full of muscadine back towards US278 and CR70. This is the first time I've found wild buch grapes; they are not nearly as sweet as the muscadines. I found some (what I'm calling) Paw-Paw fruit in two spots also. It is about half way between a peach and a persimmon in taste - not bad - never had them before. The fruit is soft with a light green edible peel and 3 or 4 seeds. It is about the size of a golf ball but more oblong.

Bad things are:
1) Spider webs that get all over you if you don't hold your trekking pole in front.
2) There was no good way to get down to Terrapin Creek to get water & bathe when I stopped last night. Had to bushwhack up and down steep bank through lots of greenbriar and other junk!

Look for me on www.alatrails.com as ednotmilkman. Great people contribute to lots of hiking discussion and fun.

18 September 2008 1 Hiker Bear Chaser Los Angeles, Ca Day Pinhoti Trail
Stopped in for a break. Nice shelter. ☺ Well done, volunteers! Trail has been slow going because of those large spiders that like to build their webs right across the trail. I keep running into them and having to pick webbing and spiders off of me. Finally, I've ended up hiking with one hiking pole in the air in front of me - like a sword at the ready. That slows me down since I can't use both poles for hiking. 😝 Hope I can make it to my destination before sundown - This is not a trail I'd want to night hike on!!

Sorry to get gross, but with the weather front moving through and having to get out three times made a mess fairly close to the shelter. Will attempt to cover with dirt and pile rocks on top. Next to tree left and behind the shelter. Sorry guys.

Man, who trashed this shelter? The tent platform a couple miles north of here and Spring Creek Shelter also have been trashed. I was planning to stay IN a shelter for the first time ever but slept in my tent instead. The shelter itself is very nice, and what a view. Watched the sunset and saw an orange moon rise. Saw a rattlesnake, a deer, and many turkey yesterday. Heard coyotes overnight and saw the owl that was hooting this morning. Quite surprised to hear traffic on 278 though it's still 2 miles by trail. Headed south today with Piedmont as my final destination. Happy hiking everyone.

10:40 am. Just stopped by on day hike from 278 to Salem Church Road. Lost 20 minutes bushwhacking in search of the tral coming up. Cool, about 60°!, windy, & wants to rain. Ready for cool weather. So no complaints. Nice shelter!
26 October 2009 2 Hikers januszhikes & Crystal Matt - Day Pinhoti Trail
We've met Dennis and Sandy on the way up. Nice local couple who hike this trail once in a while. We learned from them that there is a shelter ahead. Starting on BMT in Tennessee on 12 October, this is our first shelter. Was hard to find since there are only a few trail signs and a number of ribbons, which are hard to find once it is getting dark. We arrived at 6:28 PM. Water is hard to find also. It is down the hill to the ??? in the creek. Anyways we are fine. Nearing almost 3,000 miles on my hiking experiment from Wisconsin to Florida. It is my fourth year. I say salute to my hiking brothers and sisters. Like Nimblewill Nomad once said, we are hiking alone but all together in our spirits. I left a few of my cards if anyone wants to follow my progress. LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL ON TRAILS!

Sunday. Arrived at the shelter yesterday around 4:30, coming from High Point Trailhead, about 2.3 miles including the road portion. This is the first backpacking trip for 3 out of the 4 people in our group; they loved it! Witnessed a beautiful sunset while gathering and we left plenty for the next group. Temps must have gotten below freezing; woke up to heavy frost, but the sunrise was worth it. Also, we heard a group of coyotes close to the camp about 10pm. It was a good starter hike for my three new trail friends and I think they are hooked!
PS Good luck with the coffee pot.
18 December 2009 2 Hikers Kenny U, Gary H - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Left at Chief Ladiga Trail. Hiking the Pinhoti to Cave Springs, Georgia. Hiked all day in a steady rain and had planned to camp 2 miles earlier, but wanted to make it to the shelter to get out of the rain. Got a good fire going cooked out hobo meals, and had a nice evening. Two friends, Roger & Tommy, are meeting us here this morning o finish the hike. Gary & I hike if it's cold, hot, wet, dry, snowing, or sometimes in beautiful weather. Love the woods.

7 March 2010 2 Hikers Luke & Catrina, Bolt🐾 - Many Pinhoti Trail
We started the day at Oakey Mountain Shelter. We got up early since we had a long day and much to our surprise it was fairly warm. We left camp around 8 and started our hike. It seemed like the only direction we went was up. Everything seemed to be uphill. We did see some terrific views, though the day was warm and sunny. The birds were finally out, but so are the bugs. We stopped for lunch at Lanie Gap. We got to eat and rest and so did Bolt. The next few miles went quickly. We had done 10 miles when we crossed the highway and were beat, but we wanted to make it to this shelter so we plowed on. We filtered water and carried it up, set up, collected wood, and are finally resting. The fire is blazing and the sky is clear. Luke wishes he knew more about astronomy. ☺ We finish our Alabama Pinhoti tomorrow when we get to Jackson's Chapel Road. Hope the hills are a little cooler on us than they were today. Stay safe and happy hiking!

Passing by on a thru hike of the Alabama Pinhoti, and I'm almost there! Shelter is in a scenic spot, but too close to the highway and kinda far from water. Thank you ATA for your hard work!

13 September 2011 2 Hikers Ron & Debbie S - Day Pinhoti Trail
Hawkins Hollow tent platform was the last good experience from Woods Road to Davis Shelter. We lost the trail 3 times, no marks. If I, Debra S, did not find the roof structure in the distance, we may not have found it a 4th time. Sucks.
Happy Trails
15 September 2011 1 Hiker Thomas - Day Pinhoti Trail
I hiked in from High Point Trailhead on Hwy 278. That stretch needs to be re-blazed, and it doesn't look like anyone had done any work since the last time I was here, 2 years ago. I cleared some, and may come back & re-blaze myself.
I am grateful for the price Jesus paid to save me, and for this beauty he made.

Coach AT '07, PCT '09, CDT '10
Gotta get the first 32½ miles off road... soon...!!!
Thank you all who work to make this trail great!

It looks like the forest has been raped.
PS Where is the fucking water. I see bibles and religious shit galore but no info on where a thirsty ass hiker can score some H2O. I had to read the other log to find it.
Oops I guess it's .3 south on the trail.
PPS I don't usually tag shelters but water info is salient.

27 November 2011 1 Hiker - Day Pinhoti Trail
So I had a restful night's sleep after I finally satiated my appetite. I am thankful for this shelter as well as the full length piece of plastic that I have used to block the wind and rain. I thought it would rain yesterday but this morning I awoke to the pitter patter of tiny droplets. I decided to stay until the weather passes because hiking in the rain is not always enjoyable, plus the wind is whipping fiercely through the trees and the last thing I want is to be impaled by falling branches. I was checking out my map of the Talladega National Forest and it has loads of shelters which peaks my spirits. I'm running low on food but I'm sure there are plenty of towns for resupply. If only I could get a call signal I would be on Facebook updating my status (Which is "lovin it"), and maybe ordering a pizza. That would be a dream. I once stayed at a shelter on the AT which was next to a Ranger's Station with an outside phone. We ordered pizza and soda. This shelter also had a solar shower. Talk about all the amenities. I forget the name of the shelter, but it was great. I've been thinking of what I want for Christmas (not that I celebrate). Let's call it the winter solstice celebration.
• Longer days for more hiking.
• A new pair of gaiters.
• A map of southern Alabama that connects the southern end of TNF to the Conecuh National Forest.
And that's about it. I wonder where I'll be during the solstice. I may as well call it Christmas cuz everyone else around the south will be celebrating Christmas. Maybe I can score some work for stay in a live Nativity Scence as one of the bearded long haired wise men. Wouldn't that be funny. Vitalis Maximus from the east here to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. I come forth bearing gifts of Myrh (myrrh). I forget what the others are, gold and incense maybe, who knows, it's a conjured story anyway so I can make it up too. gold, Frankencinse, Myrhh Frankencinse (correct spelling?)
This has been a great little spot for me to rest up. I've just about eaten all the food I've been carrying around since I don't know when. I've stayed warm and dry. I've been able to rest up, because I've been running hard for a while now, and I didn't have to spend any money to do so. I hope the rain clears off tomorrow so I can make it to Heflin. I'm not sure how far away Heflin is, but who cares. I'm sure I can at least pound it to the nearest shelter to there and hit the town whenever.
