Sunday morning. Another beautiful late winter morning in Alabama. Had a pleasant night at Lanie Creek, but almost wish I had pressed on to here. Beautiful views, nice shelter. If I had, though, I wouldn't have had the experience of having a doe almos run through my vamp while I was having breakfast. She acted as if she were being chased by something (coyote, perhaps?) but I never saw what it was. Randolph Co, Al Native
13 March 2016 1 Hiker Reid M / Forkless, Aaron P Birmingham, Al Overnight Pinhoti Trail
"Forkless" & Aaron stopping for the night. From 278 to Jackson Chapel Road. Warm hike up, strong winds at night and morning, a little rain. Forced to eat dry rations. Trail was well marked and shelter in good condition. The wasps were pleasant, they minded their own business as we did ours.

This is what it was then. Enjoy the peace & beauty while you can. In 40 more years there will be 100 people a day going north or south and it will not be the same. God bless this trail.

I was here 2 months ago passing thhrough on my way north. This weekend I have been out on section 13 with my nephew Tucker. We've been lucky with the rain so far. - 2 more miles to the trailhead.
Thanks to all the people who built the trail and shelters and maintain them. I agree with Jim S in 40 years (or less) the Pinhoti will probably not be the solitude experience that it is today.

Been slow and alone since Jackson Chapel on 11 July 2016 but little voices in my head keep away loneliness. (wink)
Loving the serenity of it all. God bless those who built the wonderful shelters. I almost cried when I saw my first one at Spring Creek, and at Hawkins Hollow I was able to bathe!

Sunday. Wow, back in March 'til now only a couple dozen people! On AT I know you get that many people at one shelter in a night. Came in from north. Going back to car on Al 8 2± mile back. Beautiful day. 80° east wind. Hike back will be like all down hill! I'm 63 years old. Live Dallas Ga. Never hiked AT north of Fontana Dam. Will never have to. This trail gives me the peace I've been looking for. Looks like they may have had a forest fire Section north of shelter this past summer. God bless everyone on this trail and these great folks that help keep it in hiking shape.
I'll be back soon. Maybe to stay a couple of nights here.

Thank you to my friend Mrs Corn. She told me 50 years ago to go to the wilderness to look for the answers. I would have them if I had gone sooner.

Friday @ 8:31pm. We started our hike at 6:00pm and did a night hike to the shelter. Our journey started good and then we got lost (a couple of times). We stopped about .5 miles from the shelter to admire the stars. That was a very beautiful sight to see. We've never done a night hike before, this was well worth it!!! Thank you to everyone who made this possible!!!

I left off here early last year on my NOBO hike I started 7 years ago. In those 7 years I have done numerous other hikes too. Finally came back to finish this one. Started this morning in Georgia just because it made sense. Tomorrow I will hike back to my vehicle from here to complete my NOBO Alabama Pinhoti hike. Of course, since I got started 7 years ago they have added new sections further south. So I get to circle backwards to do those now too.

Just got here from an extended resupply @ Piedmont, too little mileage today to stop ☹ Lately, the weather's been 1 of 2 things: Scorching of drenching. This is one of those wet days. Hiking through to Springer, But Anne'll go as far north on the Applachian Trail as she can. Real nice view from here, though.

3 July 2017
3 days in. The water's running low. Ted got and infection - on his leg. It might be spreading up his leg... If things get worse, Charlie's got a nice big hatchet we ought to use. Don't know if it will come to that, though... Sight up here are real nice. Pretty good breeze. I'd almost sleep real well up here under the shelter if I didn't have to listen to Ted's God aweful moaning the whole time. Might as well just chop that sucker off....
4 July 2017
It's morning. Food's low now. Don't know about Ted - he's about gone... If pushing comes to shoving, might have to use him as provisions.
6 July 2017↙ a lre!

Ted sounds delicious. It is decided... I just stumbled upon this shelter and I am in awe. What a beautiful spot. No, you won't find gold down every road, but you'll never know without looking. You might play wait and see, but that might just be your fear keeping you from being trly free. Happy birthday, America. I hope I look this good at your age.

12:00pm. Prime time fall and the mountains are colored as if they were painted. Nature provides the most tranquility and peace, at least for me anyway. Day hike with my dog, about 75° and sunny on Sunday. Trying to escape life before the enslavement of the work week starts again tomorrow. I just recently discovered this trail, but now walk it as often as I can. I plan to walk one day, although not today, from 278 trailhead to my house in Georgia near Old Esom Hill Dirt Road about 5 miles from Cave Springs. Three weesk ago I stepped one inch away from a Timber Rattlesnake's mouth somewhere around 4 miles south of here close to the Lanie Gap so WATCH YOUR STEP! Forever grateful to the creators and keepers of the Pinhoti,

We started off this year (1 January 2018) by hiking the Benton MacKaye Trail & it was exceptionally cold. We looped back via the AT & started on a SOBO Pinhoti hike. We had so much rain that the fords were dangerous. Regular creeks were flooding & raging. We decided to flip south from Dalton to Flagg Mtn and start NOBO. Now we have unseasonably warm temperatures & we are way too hot. What will our last 5 days on this trail bring?
PS The location of this shelter is awesome!

Blazing the trail
Take a seat in the saddle
See what the future entails
If all else fails, you've got a tale to tell
What if you fail?
Would you rather be enslaved in a cell?

Knock these wall down
What's left of it to fit within the max?
A sperical obstacle to conquer
Observe what the world has to offer
The end could near
Is life what you long for?

The people are weak with their face in the screen
You can't hear them scream from behind the scenes
Release of dopamine like a dope fiend

Hike your own psyche
What you think in your mind is free
Do what you feel, mindfully
Tread on your heart in the dark
Love enough,
And expect a fire to start

4:20 pm. Peace & quiet, you cannot deny it. It's inside that the light ignites you, to become your own pilot. One slip & most quit, instead of making their own destiny, they let their destiny make them. Listen to the winds, listen from within. With the absence of noise you can actually hear yourself think again. Nature is where all medicine began. Be blind to your weather no matter how good or bad. It could always be better, so be grateful for what you have. As the world spins, and you sit here and read this, I can only hope you distinguish some of these words' meanings. The problem with the world is the social outreachings that are teaching and convincing us that technology is King. If you are listening, don't listen to me. Listen to the trees; Nature provides the answers to what your heart is most deeply desiring. Speaking out true happiness in life is something that is unexplainably inspiring.

Pappa Dink is back! Was dropped off at Jackson Chapel the 10th, which means it took 8 days to get here @ 3:30 today. Plan to homestead here for several days before heading to Oakey Mountain Shelter. 25 June 2018 1 Hiker Doc - Day Pinhoti Trail

Captain's Log, Day 1:

I woke up this morning with full intention of sitting on my ass all day, perhaps go to the grocery store; I'm all out of peanut butter & jelly. Then it hit me, like a distant voice (God, or maybe an LSD flashback) - "Climb the Mountain" So what the hell, I grabbed my bag & camelback and drove on out here.

About halfway here, after the spring that you should probably not drink from, another voice in my head cried out... "fuck."

It was hot as balls, with the humidity of Rosie O'Donnel's nether regions. I thought about suicide, but realized that I would miss my dog, Millie.

So I sucked it up and made it up the overgrown and thorn ridden trail. Alas, here I sit, writing in the book with all you hippies.

I've never been much of a hiker, but today marks the start. If you see me in the future, they call me "Doc." Also, find some way to get a vending machine up here. Like for real, It's hot as shit.
