Thursday. Out on the trail for a couple of days during spring break. Enjoying the quiet and solitude. Been a little wet the last two days but seems the trail is holding up well. Temperature is nice. Glad I'm not freezing my butt off. Well, it's time to ease off to dreamland to the tune of rushing water. Mellow '04

Friday. 3:30pm. Just out for a short stroll this afternoon. All these new signs are really awesome and the trail is in great shape. I hiked from CR 94 to FS500 two days ago and hoping to hike thought Dugger Wilderness one day next week if they re-open it. Thanks to all the trail maintainers; Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
9 April 2010 1 Maintainer John Calhoun Leeds, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
Friday. Back one more time. Met "Strut" near Oakey Mountain Shelter Wednesday. Today I cleared all the dead fall from Highway 278 to just south of Lanie Gap where I'd stopped last Tuesday. I'm enjoying the work days even though it's hard some times.
A whipoorwill sang for about an hour here on Tuesday night. Maybe he'll be back tonight!
The USFS sent me an e-mail this morning which said Dugger Mountain Wilderness Trailhead would be open 12 April 2010 (per Lesley H.)
I hope all who visit here keep the place clean and use "Leace No Trace" ethics (which are a combination of the Golden Rule and Love of Nature and Common Sense.) Thanks.
10 April 2010 2 Hikers Cain K, Ty F - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Just got through with a 3 hour hike... It was great. Time for some hot dogs, rest, and a quick hike tomorrow. Trying to get some quiet time before finals. Finally got my buddy on the trail... I think we will have another hike soon! Daily Scripture: James 4:7-8
22 April 2010 1 Maintainer John Calhoun Leeds, Al Overnight Pinhoti Trail
In for an overnight break from doing trail maintenance again. I cleared brush using my loppers along the trail north of Lanie Gap. I started at 9am and got back to the truck at 5pm. It took a little over 2 hours just to walk in and back so I guess I actually worked only 6 hours. I probably cleared about .7 miles of trail, so there's still plenty more work to be done heading on north to Highway 278. Anyone want to volunteer? Your work will be greatly appreciated.
MNS still here. I was just looking at my map. It has taken 5 days to clear from Co Road 70 (Maxwell Gap) to just south of Lanie Gap! One day, I had the help of Mark D but the rest I was alone.
23 April 2010 1 Runner Josh K - Day Pinhoti Trail
Friday. Making an out-n-back run from High Point to here (32 miles round trip.) Great day and great trail. After this run, I'll have covered every inch of the Alabama Pinhoti. Be well.

28 June 2010 1 Hiker Soaring Crow. - Day Pinhoti Trail
Hiked down to Terrapin Watershed and "borrowed" a boat for a nice little journey across the water. Narrowly escaped river monsters. However, I think they're still tracking us. By the time you read this, it may be too late. Save yourself!
28 June 2010 1 Hiker Tugboat Joe - Day Pinhoti Trail
On the way back from the watershed with my bff Soaring Crow. She's right about the river monsters... I can hear them on our trail. If it comes down to it, I may have to sacrifice her & save myself. I've got more to live for anyway. If you're reading this & heading north, avoid the water at all costs. If you're heading south, consider yourself lucky. Good luck on your journey & Godspeed!

One great thing about being from North Alabama and this trail is the Blue Blazes! I know I am a natural BLUE BLAZER! I hiked for 16 miles on the AT and kept wondering when I was gonna get one and why all those white blazes.

Just came to check out the trail and campsite. And maybe start a little campfire and watch it blaze for a little while. It's really a beautiful day. A little hot. The winds blowing just enough to feel good and cool. Right now the pine trees shade you pretty good. Whoever was here before today has really been doing a good job of taking care of the place. So thanks a lot!

18 October 2010 1 Hiker John M Pell City, Al 9 Days Pinhoti Trail
Thru hiking NOBO from Bull Gap to Jackson Chapel Trailhead, approximately 140 miles. I started my hike on 9 October. This is my 9th trail day because I spent one zero day at Cheaha State Park. I have been solo the last two days since I left Pine Glen Campground where I parted company with my son and nephew and enjoyed some really good trail support from some of my firends. Thanks Scott T.
I arrived here today at 5:07pm from Choccolocco Creek Shelter. It was a good hike over Dugger Mountain: Pretty clear trail on the ascent, but found a lot of blown down trees that made coming down interesting! I repaired the fire ring by digging it out and building it up with several new rocks. Thanks to whoever left the fire wood; I'll try to pay it forward. It is unusually warm compared to my last night at the watershed; I'm not even wearing socks! It feels almost like a late summer night, nothing like fall. I saw no one on the trail the last two days and that's OK; The solitude has been nice. I will hike ove Oakey Mounatin to the new Chief Ladiga Trail Campground where I will enjoy a good shower and some comfort food from the camp store! As of now, sites rent for $15 per night, and that includes firewood, all right next to Terrapin Creek. Thanks to all the trail maintenance folks who work to make all this possible. Keep up the good work. It's been a good hike thus far and I'm looking forward to the finish.
5 November 2010 1 Hiker Dennis D, Angie R - Day Pinhoti Trail
Burns to here. Yellow Blaze back to Burns. Dugger Mountain needs more BLAZES. Lost the trail many times. Great time however.

9:03pm. This shelter a welcome sight as darkness was closing quickly on a damp and dreary December day. Rain has flirted all day since start at Co 94. Third trip to Pinhoti and all enjoyable. This section very different from the sections south from Co 55 to Shoal Creek. Challenging vertical charges and rocky (leaf covered) trail working on these joints! The vino and Motrin should soothe and prepare for day two. Awaiting the parting clouds and full moon to complete the relaxing evening campfire. Will retire soon if it does not show. Happy Trails.
24 December 2010 2 Hunters Chip, Autin S Sylvania, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
Hello fellow hiker. Me and my son are huntin' today, but decided to hike up and see the shelter. Trail is in very good condition & the shelter is a welcome site for travellers. Well, we are headed down to spend time with family. Merry Christmas and God Bless. War Eagle.
2 January 2011 1 Hiker Scott B, Matthew M Jackson, Ms Many Pinhoti Trail
This is our first time on the Pinhoti Trail. It's in great condition and the shelters are awesome. We had to spend two days at the Chief Ladiga Campground due to a real turd floater. Spent New Years under the porch of the camp store. It's supposed to be a cold night tonight. Around 20°F. I hope we don't have to huddle together for warmth... Gross. Happy Hiking. Go State!

2 April 2011 2 Hikers Chris S / Polite Ghost, Clay B / Roflawfulgator - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Only through the overwhelming discipline that was imparted to the Polite Poltergeist via the Marines were we able to wake up at the crack of noon. A beautiful day greeted us, as well as a strage, elderly couple from Biloxi, Ms who were very talkative, very friendly, and who -God bless 'em- couldn't pronounce the name to any of the local camping sites correctly.
PS If you're gonna hide money in the woods, remember to bring a spade.👓

Monday. Breezy, partly cloudy, 80°. Left Oakey (I was calling it Oakley) Mountain Shelter @ 8am. Arrived Dugger Shelter 2:30pm, with 1 hour break @ Terrapin Dam. We woke up Chris & Clay @ noon 3 April 2011. Didn't know I was strange, Maybeesow! Bad weather in store for tonight, heading SOBO in AM.
PS Storm came in @ 8pm. Lots of 🗲 to the north and south, but no strikes in camp site. Had rain & strong winds, shelter was great protection! Heard sirens going off, or was it tornados.
11 April 2011 1 Hiker JB, Sonny - Many Pinhoti Trail
Passing by on a thru hike. Man, the Dugger Mountain Wilderness is gorgeous, but hikers will not find any fire ring or established campsites (in the wilderness.) Those are illegal and I just removed about 5 that were in the wilderness. I also hiked out the tin cans, Jolly Rancher wrappers, napkins, cigarette butts, and aerosol can that was around the sites. Remember wilder sites are by law meant to remain free of man's use or signs of previous work. So if you do camp there, break up your fire ring and for God's sake hike out your trash. Thanks.
PS The shelter is in great shape. Thank Y'all.

Face Sunday. Got in yesterday dog tired from the hike from Oakey Shelter. Bot what a hike for two old guys. The last two miles seemed the longest. Never thoughtwe would get here from Terrapin Dam. That two miles seemed like five. By the grace of God we got here. Dennis was ahead of me and already had a nice fire going. We rested, ate, sat up 'til close to nine hoping Alabama beat Tennessee. Last reoprt from my daughter was 6-6. All in all, this was a great, blessed weekend. And what better way to do it with God and a friend. Good hiking Y'all.

Scouting various sites along the Alabama Pinhoti I have not seen before this weekend in preparation for a spring thru hike from Bull's Gap to Cave Springs has brought me to Dugger Mountain. Wonderful shelter to weather the storm. The sleeping table is a nice addition to the camp & especially good for star gazing. Leave no trace.

28 December 2011 2 Hikers Time Traveller, Toe Stumper - Day Pinhoti Trail
Wednesday. Hiked in from Oakey this morning. Got here around 11:30. The Terrapin Watershed and mountains were an awesome view. I think the two miles to here, though, is a little off. Especially if it's ¼ mile from the sign to here, then the ¼ mile from the sign to the road is more like ½ miles. Maybe it needs to be restepped. Anyhow, nice trails. Was gonna stay here nut we had bad news at home. So had to hike through the wilderness to get to the truck. Probably better that way anyhow. Hope to come back and do it again with my daughter & Toe Stumper's Family. Peace out.

11:18am. Just got thru hiking up the old tower road to the top of the mountain. Then hiked down the trail and came here. This is the third yearthat I have done this. Last year Pam J and Ashley S hiked with me. You can find our message we left last year 19 February 2011. I made the hike alone this year. Unfortunately, Pam is having to take chemo for breast cancer. Been praying she gets better. Plan on making this hike an annual event, so hopefully I'll be writing again in this journal next year. Until then, God Bless!

Making good on a promise to stop here after a grueling 0.25 mile hike from the car and have a do-nothing boys weekend. Last time we parked at FS500 saw the shelter but passed on towards Oakey even though the guys wanted to stop and make bows/arrows, traps, shelters, and so forth. Instead we hiked and never found the Oakey Shelter. We made camp on the trail at dusk. This time, we stayed at Dugger Mountain Shelter, shot BBs, cooked on the fire (shh!), threw knives, threw rocks, and all sorts of things mother would never allow. All in all a great weekend.

12pm. Today I smoked two blunts here.
1:30pm. Just heard Sasquatch. Gettin' my rifle.
3pm. Shit. So high.
Got lost a minute ago hunting for wild Sasquatch. I shot one about 8 feet tall. Stank like feces, but I lost him. I was following his trail of blood when raccoons dove out of a tree and began kung fu fighting me. I shredded them with my helicopter dick. Then the sasquatch comes around a huge boulder and throws a straight right hand that I blocked with my forearms. The punch sends me crashing through hundreds of trees until I land here. It is here, that I, the fucking man, turn into a super savior on these very steps, and blast a kanehamaha at the sasquatch, defeating him. Man I'm awesome!
10 April 2012 1 Hiker - Day Pinhoti Trail
We hid the body 12 paces behind the shelter. We couldn't take the smell anymore, and we were out of Vaseline. Then I sat on my front porch and drunk my beer with my finger in my belly button. Just thinking of all the disgusting things I've done. Over 30 bodies scattered all over the place. And that's when my buddy Holly comes in with his coke bottle glasses and 24 round clip shotty2hotty and mows down the grass with it. And by grass I mean boys and poodles. It's sad that not a day goes by that I think about how I buried my wife out here years ago. Now my other son can be with his man at last.

Tuesday. Here for another solo work trip. Cleared from the first dirt road north of here almost to the lake. Still needs a little trimming in a small patch of maple leaf viburnium. Next I guess I should go clear the southern slope of the Wilson Tank Top Ridge between Co Road 90 & 74? Southern Maxwell Gap. Going to Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia next weekend and plan to go to ALDHA in October. Have a great hike and enjoy the woods.
20 May 2012 3 Hikers Kenny, Gary, Ted - Day Pinhoti Trail
8:00am. Hiked in yesterday. Hard hike from Pinky Burns Trailhead (for me, anyway.) Took us 6 hours. Spent a lovely evening telling lies and drinking. Not to mention a left handed one or two. Had a good night's sleep, ate a good breakfast with some excellent coffee, filled our water containers down at the creek for the next leg of our journey. It's on to Oakey Shelter for another evening of drinking & lies.
PS Was here about 3 years ago hiking the other direction.
20 May 2012 1 Hiker Weenail - Day Pinhoti Trail
Started hiking today at Pinky Burns with a goal of completing the Pinhoti. I have done section hikes since 1993 and only have this last section to go. Be careful on this part of the trail. Back a mile or so I saw a young boy and a girl dressed like a country ham. They got real scared when I came up behind them. After I passed them I came up on a real quiet guy named "Boo." He was a little scary. I just hope I don't end up with a kitchen knife stuck in my rib cage. Weenail 2010
20 May 2012 2 Hikers Milkman, Believa - Many Pinhoti Trail

Believa will be signing in at Oakey Mountain. Take Care.

Tuesday. In for dinner. Just got through using the Echo Blade Cutter to clear the rest of the two miles from FS500 north to almost Terrapin Creek Lake. Still needs work onward towards dam. This morning I cut brush on the west side of the scenic drive south of US78 where the tornado hit on Mother's Day 2008? or 2009? Still got more work there.
Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia, was great. Then my wife and I rode horses in Colorado for a week. Hope all who hike our Pinhoti Trail have a great time and Please: pack out your trash and others' also.

20 January 2013 1 Hiker Quakerland Forge - Many Pinhoti Trail
Sunday. 32°F. No clouds, glorious sun. Feet healing well but require constant care. Pack weight down ~5 pounds since 6 January 2013 on Flagg Mountain!
The morning sun reminds me of John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High."
"Sunshine on my shoulders
 Makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes
 Makes me cry
Sunshine on the waters
 Looks so lovely
Sunshine nearly always
 Makes me High"

Quakerland Forge

I wish for you
The sun in your face
and the wind at your back
as you hike today!
31 January 2013 1 Hiker Crow - Many Eastern Continental Trail
Crow checking in. It really flooded yesterday! I walked Dugger Mountain with thunder all around and sheets of rain coming down. I have to admit I was a little worried. Right before the shelter northbound I crossed 6 rushing rivers. I am a fairly big man and I had a little concern about my footing in the current. I hope everyone is okay after that. They had the sirens and an announcement for warning even. But now the sun is bearing nto the shelter (BTW Thanks Volunteers!) On to Maine!
3 February 2013 1 Hiker Robert C - Day Pinhoti Trail
Cheaha Mountaineering, Solo, Robert C out for a day hike. 50°, sunny, very winded. Nice day for a hike.
23 February 2013 2 Hikers Blue Pigeon, Blingo - Day Pinhoti Trail
Had a nice day hike north of the shelter. Overall, it has been a quiet and cloudy day. We had intended to hike to the Dugger Mountain Summit today, but the three previous days of rain made the stream too treacherous to cross, especially for a nine year old. Nice temperature (50s) for hiking, though. Hopefully, we can try again before the trees bud and obscure the view. May God Bless your trails ahead!
1 March 2013 3 Hikers Bobby R, Tyronda, Sally / Sweet n' Low - Day Pinhoti Trail
Year number 4 hiking to the top of Dugger Mountain. Went up the tower road. Came down Pinhoti Trail. Had Tyronda and Sally / Sweet n' Low with em. Have had a great time.
1 March 2013 1 Hiker Tyronda D - Day Pinhoti Trail
Well, some co-workers of mine talked me into going hiking up Dugger Mountain. Being that I never been hiking before I said how bad could it be? So here I was huffing and puffing up this mountain. Then we get to the road and they say let's go to this shelter and sign this book. It's not that bad, thay said. It's only ¼ mile. Needless to say, after hiking this mountain, then hiking another ¼ mile... It was (not) that bad, but I had fun after all.
PS I didn't mention having to cross 4 creeks in which I got wet crossing all 4 of them. Now I have to walk I don't know how many miles back to my truck with my socks & shoes soaking wet...
1 March 2013 1 Hiker Sally T - Day Pinhoti Trail
Well, the end of the world didn't come like everyone said it would. So this year I decided to do things more adventurous. So Bobby & Tyronda are here! I'm on my third walking stick. I lost / left my first one. Broke my second one after falling on a boulder. And found a new one on the way. My feet are soaked but I'm having a blast! Next month we are going skydiving. So next time I write in this book, I will report how many walking sticks I used. And to show I survived the Jump. ☺
17 March 2013 2 Hikers Kyle J, Katie M - Day Pinhoti Trail

6 April 2013 1 Hiker ? - 10 Days Pinhoti Trail
Saturday. I set out Monday from High Point and 6 days and sixteen miles later I am here. I sure ain't setting any Terrapin land speed records. Even if they have two broke legs, and that is for sure and for certain. Now at Oakey Mountain Shelter the sign said that there was reliable water here but I have yet to find it. And it I don't ± could be in trouble.
Sunday 7 April 2013
"Turn out the lights, the party's over, all good things must come to an end."
Found water at the fire road a ¼ mile down hill. I was exhausted and spent the night. Realized I had an extra day of rationsand ate more to get energy. Built what could have been a fire but I went to sleep before I could light it. It'll be there for the next hiker. Weather said thunderstorms on Thursday so I'm making for Coleman's Lake and having my wingman pick me up there. No sense in sitting my last day out due to rain so I'll go in a day early.
This trip has been exhaustingagonizing, backbreaking... Need to figure out when I can do it again, starting from Coleman's Lake and heading south, of course.

15 November 2013 1 Hiker Starfish - Many Pinhoti Trail
Friday. Arrived about 3pm. I came from Choccolocco Creek Shelter. This hike or section, Choccolocco to Dugger Mountain Shelter, was closed since there was a wildfire about Thursday. When I hiked to Choccolocco Thursday night I'd seen lots of smoke. Trail was closed near Burns Trailhead. CR55. I passed a guy; he said coming south the trail was closed but the fire was out. I heard people by Burns Trailhead; but looked around and decided to hike it. Fire was out, smokey areas... I thought waht the hell!? If the hills were on fire (They were not.) then I'd not have kept hiking. From CR55 on Pinhoti, only 30 minutes uphill was burnt; then trail was OK. About 12:00pm there's been a ton of cloudy weather, gray skies and light rain. I guess there'll be no fire for me tonight. This looks like a great shelter & thanks to all the Pinhoti Trail Maintainers. Well marked & cut up! Still heading north tomorrow, hopefully rain will pass. I lost a camo sleeping bag cover on Dugger Mountain. If found, enjoy it.

19 December 2013 1 Hiker Detour Ed - Many Pinhoti Trail
Just missed those guys ↑ by a day or one. It has been one arduous journey from GA-ME-GA-Ala. Finally, 15 years or so, I lost count. Every year I do as much as I can from 15 December - 30 December andone state left. I hear this one isn't even totally finished to Florida, so I may stop before Florida.
After this, probably a year or two from now, It's off to the west coast and yes, I'm walking.
Just wanted to say to Mother Nature's Son that I hope you have a nice trip out west.
I had a nice time talking to you and hope to assist you with some trail work. Take great care.

8:00am. Spent the night here after a 20 mile day from Laurel. We walked through snow, ice, downed trees, sunshine, then back through solid ice along Dugger Mountain Gap. On to Cave Springs, Georgia. Bama, you have some crazy weather. Also, whoever left the sleeping bag liner you are a god. It saved my life last night.

Started in Georgia two days ago, put in 30 miles to this point. Raining here this morning and have feet problems, so going to take a day or two off. Nice shelter, no mice, heard an owl at dark. Water is at road .25 miles. No sign to tell you!
3 March 2014 1 Hiker Aumagic - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Two days on the trail with Smurf above for my first overnight backpacking adventure... At 51 I figured it was as good a time as any to start. Always liked hiking and camping, & combining them seems like a natural next step. It was more of an endurance challenge than I expected, but I loved it! ...Will definately do it again ... maybe complete the entire trail one day. Keep Trekking.
