Laurel Shelter Plan View Summer is here, it's getting hot.
At 4pm a 3' foot snake came to visit. I believe it was a rat snake. I tried to give him some of my peanut shells, on his head. He didn't like my hospitality and left. I watched him go to the tree with the blue markers.
I'll be leaving in the morning. I hope you can't tell that I've been here, except for this note.
See you sometime.

2 July 2006 2 Hikers - - Day Pinhoti Trail
Quite warm, or as my buddy says, "Hot as Hellfire." Right now on a break. On a 3 day hike from Burns Trailhead to USF500? Haven't seen a soul except for Pine Glenn, which was covered over with campers for the holiday. From Pine Glen on south all streams seem very low, if not utterly dry. Unsurprising considering the drought conditions in Alabama last 2-3 weeks. Saw a rattler snake South of Pine Glenn. We didn't bother him and he didn't seem real interested in us. Have seen several deer and heard plenty of wildlife. Beware - New wasp nest in front eaves of shelter.
22 July 2006 1 Maintainer Howard G / Pappy - Day Pinhoti Trail
Pappy Out doind a trail survey so that we can plan our maintenance outings that we do once a month. So far I have come from Coleman Lake, and have seen only a few blowdowns.
Will note them and plan to remove them as soon as possible. Headed towards Pine Glenn. Might get rain, so we'll see. I'm doing an out and back so it may depend on the rain chances. Weather seems to be a lot better at least for me. Light breeze helped tremendously.

6:45pm Hot!!! Hot!! Hot!!! Hiked in from Coleman Lake. Nice short hike. Trail is pretty overgrown around pine beetle kill area. The area north of the shelter has a recent burn (Lightning?) Firs did not seem to be too hot and camp area not affected. Creek is low but flowing. The cool water felt good after a hot hike in. 1st trip to the Laurel Mountain Shelter. Nice for a 20 year old shelter. Will have to come back in this fall when it's cool enough to sleep inside. I think we will sleep outside tonight and hope things cool down. Saw large deer moving on ridge behind shelter about 5:30pm. Time for dinner before dark.
Happy Trails!

22 October 2006 1 Hiker Book Burner - Many Pinhoti Trail
Starting to smell the finish of a great nobo thru hike. What a gorgeous stretch today from the Rio Grande crossing to here! One of the best days of hiking in along while.
I had one of the oddest (and longest of shots) that happened to me along the way. I heard a thump up in the woods. And then another. Next thing I know, a fully mature, gigantic, massive tree starts falling right towards me - and I mean right towards me! I was directly in its fall path. As soon as I realized what was happening (and what was going to happen if I didn't move) I put my caboose in gear and started sprinting down the trail. Luckily nothing hit me, but the closest branch to me once the dust settled was only 15 feet away. Absolutely amazing. What are the odds? Lesson for everyone - look up when picking your campsite. Dead limbs (or huge Oak Trees) do fall sometime or another. What grows up, must fall down.
Hike well, ignore the smell

Tuesday. Left Pine Glen @ 1:55pm. Here @ 3:25. Will stay for the night. Try to make next shelter on Wednesday and get to my truck @ FS500 on Thursday Evening. Going to be cold tonight. I started hiking this trail in December and have been doing 20-40 miles per week. I then may try to hike it without going home. Trying to see if I have the mental strength to hike the PCT this spring.
19° @ 6am. Mice shredded tp by my head without waking me. Nice shelter. Trail is well maintained & thanks to Solo for great trail guide. Leaving @ 7am for next shelter - about 10 miles.
25 January 2007 1 Hiker Mr Parkay - Many Pinhoti Trail
Well, I made it in just before dark... Cool shelter, but I have this urge to night hike a few hours more. Taking a break for about ½ hour though... To let my MP3 player's batteries recharge... Gotta have music or audio drama for a quality night hike. Been listening to Elliot Smith and Tenacious D live recordings mostly. Downloaded from Archive.org. Awesome website for music... Legal too!☺ Or I may listen to my audio book of "Walden" by Henry David Thorou (Wrong Spelling I know). Another option is an epidsode of "Radio Detective Story Hour" - a Podcast. Good stuff! By the way, the best detective audio drama is "Black Jack Justice" from Decoderring.com ... Download it. It's awesome. My absolute favorite thing to listen to while hiking is the BBC Audio Drama representation of "The Lord of the Rings". 13 hours long it is! Why am I writing all this?.... Because I'm waiting for the stupid MP3 player to re-charge... hurry up MP3 player! → Hiking wise, this is day #6 and I still haven't seen any other hikers. I miss other hikers.

This weekend the NatureBound Club had a members only trip. We are a club from Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Georgia. The weather was very nice - Sunny, little bit cloudy, and in the 50s during the day. It rained during the night, but we were able to have a roaring fire in the morning. We had a nice, relaxing weekend. This area with the shelter (well built), the sun breaking through the trees, and the wind rustling through the leaves added to the weekend. A beautiful weekend.

Tracks Dog Hell Yes! Made good time today! 18,2 miles and here before 5pm. Yeehaw! Beat the rain too! Our pup is very tired and unhappy with us - She passed out immediately upon arrival. We were stoked to see that Mr Parkay signed in on 25 January 2007. We also hiked GA-ME in 2006... But we never met him - We just always read his entries - Now we are here in Alabama, different trail, still reading his entries - Maybe we'll meet someday! 3 mere days of our thru-hike - Then back to Asheville, NC to finish semester - The Vermont Long Trail this summer!

Blaze Forrest in for a break and to give feet a rest. This is day 3, it is 9:00am. Not sure where I stayed last night, just fell asleep on the ground somewhere. Must have done between 23-27 miles yesterday. I started this trail with the same mentality as I had going into southern Maine last year on my 2006 thru hike. However, this is pretty much flat compared to S Maine. It's still very beautiful, though, and have seen @ least a dozen turkey and more deer. Although I have seen only one person in two days, which is kinda nice. I don't have any music, either. Nature has a very very subtle rythem to it. And that's what I want to be closer to. And I have!!!
Be good all!

I can see that the journal did not have a pen so I will leave mine. I always enjoy hikers comments and thoughts about their experiences on the trail. I arrived here about 12:20 from Pine Glenn Campground. I'm doing an annual trail survey fro my hiking club (ATCA) Appalachian Trail Club of Alabama. So far the trail looks pretty good. There is a little storm damage from Highway 431 to I20 that we hope to address real soon. I will put the survey on our website soon. (ATCA.com or Pinhoti.org)
Well, I must rest and get ready to head back to Pine Glenn. Hope everyone has or had a good summer. I guess school will start soon for a lot of these folks. (Sorry ☺)

Emily Hiked in from Pine Glen. It is really hot, but flat, so who is complaining? This shelter is really nice, shame it's too early to camp. We figure that we will walk up to the other lake, take again, ← do a loop back around to maybe camp back at the lake tonight. We are from Atlanta, and have noticed the difference in foliage. A lot less diversity but gorgeous none the less. My partner has been clearing out the spiders for me, Glad of that! Looks like the trail hasn't been hiked on for a while. Nice to have the privacy ☺.

Day trip - Columbus Day 3 day weekend. Camped here before and have fond memories. Steve walked into a big spider web and the poor spider crouched scared to pieces on his chest; we gently put him / her? down. I used to be terrified of spiders. Now, I love all critters (within reason ☺), especially spiders. They are quite magical, they are. It's supposed to be fall colors, but it's comfortably warm and everything is still green with lots of wildflowers. Amazing and nice. Been a drought, creeks dry or low. Hope mother earth is healed soon & we all stay alive & healthy in the process. Nature is so healing, aay? Whoever reads this I hope you enjoy your time here... 21 October 2007 1 Hiker Howard Gillman (ATCA) - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Howard G Sense this is the last page I'll tell John Calhoun aka (Mother Nature;s Son) who's a friend of mine so that he can put out a new journal. Arrived here yesterday around 3:30 pm and thought maybe I would have some company, but no one came. It seems that when you are alone everything is magnified and every sound means something. But it also gives you time to reflect.
I enjoy my stay, built nice fire and enjoyed the early fall coolness. I enjoy reading these journals very much. It seems that we all have a common thread we enjoy being out in God's creation. I say God's creation because I can not any other word to describe it. Unfortunately we are creatures of time and my time is closing with my stay and so I must leave. Hiking back to Coleman Lake Trail. It was a nice in and out.
Hope to see you on the trail.

4 November 2007 6 Hikers Mt Dog, Lyin Dog, Rabbit, Bandade, Snake Lady, Sunshine - Day Pinhoti Trail
Froze 2 death. 2 Days. ☹ Think we heard a bear last night .. like a mouse! Felt like hopping out of camp in sleeping bag. Below 30° is torture!!!

On December 25th, 2007 John Calhoun and I (Dan Bedore) walked on the Pinhoti in the Choccolocco Management Area to replace the register in the Laurel Shelter. A steady ice cold rain fell. We saw two flocks of over a dozen turkeys each.
