Tuesday. Even though it is not the 12th (See last entry) we are having a great hike. Started at Shoal Creek Ranger Station on Highway 78 Monday (21 April 2010) and stayed last night at Lower Shoal Shelter. This is a very nice shelter, but Lower Shoal is the prettiest shelter on the Pinhoti. I'm from Auburn (just live there, Roll Tide!!) and brought my youngest brother from Olethe, Kansas! Yesterday was his birthday, 41st. Going on to Choccolocco Shelter tomorrow, then out at Pinky Burns Trailhead.

  1. ) Monkeys.
  2. ) All lakes should come with a rope swing & water trampolines.
  3. ) Solar powered Coke machines placed randomly in woods.
  4. ) An Ewok village.
  5. ) Bikini babes holding signs at every mile marker,
  6. ) Jacuzzi Shelters Hobbit holes instead of shelters.

"He's not putting those damn rattlesnakes in my camper anyways!!"
Flip floppin' round on the Pinhoti thsi summer! Doing from Coleman to Pine Glen today! That puts me all the way to 278 in two weeks doing sections! Gonna try to go from Springer to Piedmont soon! It will be nice to thru-hike for a change! Although most thru hikers are only section hikers of the ECT anyways! Remember, a true thru hiker is someone who is never done hiking!!! I can't think of a better way to spend the summer than being on the Pinhoti! It's good to be home but hoping te wilderness survival guide job in the Pisgah comes thru soon. Then I will be getting paid to hike!
HAIRNT!

Hiked in from paved road. Just a warm up. Here with son Jay and long time friend Steve. Been coming here since late (or mid) 70s. Jay came on an overnighter with me when he was 5 or 6, and he's 35 now. Lots of fond memories and fun times! He's been a fond hiking partner all thru the years. We've shared lots of adventures together. Steve has mentored Jay and I in rope work & axes. Many tree tops too! Wife Jane & I now retired & living in north central Indiana- (Goshen). We're here not only to spend time together but to discuss a Wyoming hike next summer in the Big Horns - week long! Can't wait! Lots of planning and logistics to put together. What a fun place this is and has been!
30 December 2010 3 Hikers Steve Bowdon, Ga Day Pinhoti Trail
Thursday. 8:20pm Eastern Time. I'm here mostly for the fellowship... A quiet time between Christmas and the New Year - to appreciate blessings. John M is "home" from northern Indiana to visit his son, Jay. We (John, Jay, & I) have spent many years adventuring together. This is an improptu trip... But it gives us time outside together. Friends you can believe in! It doesn't get much better. Thank you, Lord! We should all count our blessings as we live. I count this as one of mine. Steve

On a very slow thru hike with my dog. Started Bulls Gap on 11 March. Stopped @ 431 Trailhead on 18 March, 60 miles, took a break. Started back on 431 Trailhead 28 March. My dog is the reason I've been going so slow (Not Really!)
I hiked much of this trail 10 years ago right after high school. I got lost, way overpacked, and had a miserable outing. So much better with a clear trail, accurate map, light gear, and best friend.
This was probably the most scenic day so far. Noodles with a can of donated chicken for dinner (Thank You trail people.)

15 April 2011 2 Hikers Salmon, Soot - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Knot 2nd day at this shelter. It's raining and the shelter has been broken by a falling tree. That wasn't the worst part, however; The worst part was when the angry Oompa Loompas from 4 June 2010 of this journal attacked us. However, the apple pies were delicious. Salmon and I are about to locate Oprah. After that, we will find the bikini babes and handcuff them and tickle them with firey sticks. Damn Ewoks.
Great Shelter!
PS Backcountry handcuff instructions on back of page.
Backcountry handcuffs by Salmon & Soot.
This is a rope. You'll need 4-5 feet.
Make a loop.
Make a second loop.
Make sure the right loop goes over the front & the left loop goes under the back.
Overlap the loops, left over right.
Pull overlapped segments through opposite loops as shown in diagram.
Pull loops out from top to close the knot.
Pull loops from bottom to make bigh enough for hands.
Hands go through stars.
Now pull the ends as tight as you can to close the handcuffs.
This should look more symmetric. I'm not much of an artist... Sorry!
PS We located Oprah.

Here on the trail with friends from Auburn University!
One of the fellows accidentally dropped his tent. We're chillin' while he goes back to find it. A few of us have blisters. I brought way too many snacks. I've been eating all of them...
Having a good day so far! There was a 60% chance of rain, but we are still dry and rain free!
Horray.
I forgot to put on deodorant today. So did Hayes...
There are 11 of us here! Only 3 girls and 8 dudes!
Gotta go fill on water then hit the trail again!
The list of 4 June 2010 made us laugh out loud. I love the back country handcuffs too.
I ♡ this book. Jennifer

Stayed a good night stop over. Layed awake listening to an owl. How great that was. Thought how kids today have that happen in their lives. We live in a techno world so I thank God for the health I've been given and for making such a beautiful world. Out here to see and remind us how insignifcant we are and how he talks to us when everything is so silent. Be blessed and know who He is.

Realized we had to hike 17 miles today. 7 left from here (We think - The Pinhoti Maps are a little Janky and out of scale.) Nora is angry and a little violent because we seem to have misplaced the yoghurt covered pretzels. We'll make it though. Pack on.

Monday 12:05pm. Great day, wow! Here for another solo work trip. Just cut several minor blow down trees from here south to Sweetwater Lake. Also trimmed a little. The trail has been cleared from here south 62+ miles to Clairmont Gap (south of Cheaha) since August 2011. The middle of Horn Mountain needs some work. Rebecca Mountain is in good shape. The northern end from 278 to Georgia is in good shape. The middle of Dugger Mountain needs some trimming. Any volunteer workers would be much appreciated.
Thanks

6 April 2013 2 Hikers Cynthia Moon Goddess, Steve Eagle Ape / Mr Natural Sax, Anniston Day Pinhoti Trail
Scene We usually hike about 7-8 miles every trip, about 3 or more times a month. This time we made the decision to bring our 10 year old westie dog with us & she's out of shape. So today this will be a short hike, much to our chagrin. So, we won't have to carry her, and she's heavy! (Very stout breed.) So we're going back home (Sax / Anniston) to drop her off and then go to the Duck Bank Lake Walk in Oxford. I recently got to try out a Schwinn stationary bike that moves arms too, & loved it. I will get one soon as staying in shape is high on our list of priorities. We've been to this shelter many times. This is an extremely easy trail compared to some in the Cheaha Wilderness area.
All of the matter & things everywhere are sacred. Nature reminds us of this especially so. I love you. Thanks for reading.
7 April 2013 2 Hikers Stephanie & Mark P - Day Pinhoti Trail

9 April 2013 1 Hiker Let's Party, Bottoms Up - Many Eastern Continental Trail
I wasn't sure if hiking was my thing. I've never owned a pair of sneakers and I can't go more than 12 hours without talking to my boyfriend. His name is Charlie and he's really fit but is allergic to the specific pine cones of this area. But I had never seen a shelter or anything. But I was nervous and Charlie was really worried about me but anyway taking a break.

16 April 2013 2 Hikers Tom, Frankie - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Spent the night here. Some critters made some noise, but overall a restful night. Hiking the Pinhoti NOBO from Porter Gap to Cave Springs, Ga. Spring is a great time to hike this trail. Thanks to John C, B Bob, and others who maintain the trail, and also to the many people who built the shelters. Bless all of you. God is good.
19 April 2013 1 Hiker John W - 2 Days Pinhoti Trail

26 April 2013 1 Hiker Moe T Crow, The Bug, Muttleg - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Back again. A bit of rain but not too bad. Made banana nut muffins for breakfast. ☺ Yum! The Bug is getting better at this and says she is ready for a longer hike. Found I left trioxiane (green foil pack). Use it for a fire when wood is wet. I have more. ☺ Hope you have a great hike.
3 May 2013 1 Hiker Josh P - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Molly the dog and I spent a great night. The ticks are fierce. Might have to tick bag my food. Shelter was great.
3 May 2013 1 Hiker CL - Many Eastern Continental Trail
Had a cup of coffee and a fried??- campfired bologna sandwich this morning, with the company of a small bird chillin' in the shelter. He's not acting like I'm in his home or anything; He's just hanging out singh! Is it always this cloudy in Alabama??? Alabama, Vampire's welcome. The wood doesn't like to burn here, is that what the alchohol is for? Whoever made the juggling balls and instructions kudos to you. Ingenious. The Pinhoti has been beautiful. I started the ECT hobbling and limping my first month. I now run uphill sections with a 65 pound pack. Maybe I'll make the AT weather deadline after all. Not looking forward to large packs of hikers, though. I love the solitude (Most of the time) of the Florida Trail and the Pinhoti. Well, I usually don't write in these things; I think I'm just procrastinating leaving. 1 more smoke and I'm off - Late.
PS This forest likes to throw sticks at my head.

12 May 2013 2 Hiker Cynthia & Steve - Day Pinhoti Trail
Happy Mother's Day.♡ Saw some interesting critters the last 3 hikes. Saw a Speedy Gonzalez mouse run down the trail past us. He was flyin'. Last week @ Pine Glen saw 2 snakes. One huge: I think is was a Rat Snake laying in a tree. About 3½ - 4'. Long ad as big around as your average lemon, very cool. Usually see turkeys & saw deer yesterday. Sitting here about to have a gnosh. Nice & cool today. Gonna miss this nice cool spring weather. Enjoy.
PS Gourmet gnosh of Yukon Cajun smoked salmon, Brie, Rosemary crackers, fig & cranberry chutney, & perfect apple slices ~ mmm; can't be beat ~ IMHO

That that is is! McD
A bird hung out in the shelter with me this morning & lighning bugs were awesome last night. Hope the rain dies down. Looking forward to another shelter tonight if it storms.

1 June 2013 ? Hikers Troop 777: Todd, Carter - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
A small group came from Pine Glen on the overnight hike for the troop. We had a great time, and loved te shelter. The rest of the troop and the leaders hiked the 5 miles back to Pine Glen. I am hiking to the road and they will pick me up there. This was difficult but rewarding for me as I broke my hip 5 months ago. My son Carter, 14, woke me up this morning in the rain in a hammock and happy in this world.
Safe travels everyone.
21 June 2013 1 Hiker SE Nelson - Day Pinhoti Trail

10 August 2013 4 Hikers Moe T Crow, Mutleg, A Marine - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Was here again with Mutleg. Brought the Fatman and a Marine for their first backpacking trip. They both did well and are ready to do it again. Had a bit of rain but not too bad. Tried a simple ring suspension on the hammock. Head end slipped and I woke up head down - Not fun! But as always a good trip. Packed out someone else's trash. Wish folks would pack out their own stuff!
10 August 2013 1 Hiker Marine - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Thanks MT Crow; had an awesome time and can't wait 'til our next adventure. And I'll make sure to have a hammock. Although my back feels better now, I didin't like the way it felt first thing this morning. And to The Fatman great spending time with you also. Happy B-day.
31 August 2013 2 Hikers BamaRunner - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Bushwhacked our way down from Burns Trailhead and ??? stopped somewhere on the trail abou 4-4.5 miles in since we got a late start. While crossing a creek slipped and put a gash in my hand. Stopped here for the day. Then going to try to get into town. It'll need a couple of stitches. Daughter lives in Anniston. Hiking with my son, we left our wives @ home and just spending some time together. Having a good time. Tomorrow will try to find help or a trail angel.

Slept at Laurel Shelter this night. Hiked up - slightly south of Lower Shoal Shelter (north of Heflin). I resupplied at Heflin, having started my Alabama Pinhoti Section Hike from Bull's Gap, near Sylacauga. It was likely in the 20sF tonight because last night 12 November was said to be 25°F. No one here but me. Big fire, red beans, rice, tuna and calm stream over yonder. Great shelter. Weather, these past few days, has been sunshine and blue skies. Aw Yeah!

12 February 2014 2 Hikers John Pannill, Stuart Hickey / Gramps - Many Great Eastern Trail
Wednesday 5:00pm. Today is the 12th day of our GET thru hike which we will follow up with a southbound hike of the AT to create the first hike of the Great Appalachian Loop. We started from Flagg Mountain and are on our way to New York to the North Country Scenic Trail. We started this morning in heavy rain, which turned into an ice storm, and now we are getting heavy snow. WTF Alabama? Tomorrow is a 20 mile day to Dugger Mountain Shelter, then we're off to Cave Springs, Ga for a re-supply. I'm excited to be hiking through the snow. Jo & Bart, we found your entry in here from your thru hike last year! 22 January 2013. Right now we are both just sitting in the shelter listening to all the branches falling in the woods and waiting for the Bikini Babes of 4 June 2010. We also saw a starved and frozen rattlesnake by the lake today, as well as the birdy from 3 May 2013. Reading through this trail log has been very entertaining. I wish we had something to leave here for the next hikers. And we're still hoping for a case of beer at the next shelter!

1 March 2014 5 Hikers Walker S, John P, Rich H, Beau S, Scott S - Day Pinhoti Trail
This is a younger man's sport! The map stated 3 miles from Pine Glen, but I'm pretty certain we came 10 or 12. The frozen steaks kept the salads cool. And the gentle shuffling of our feet sent vibrations through to improve the sedimentation of the bourbon. 5 guys totalling well over 250 years of experience. And not one pack less than 35 pounds.

A 1 day, 5 mile hike. Sad.

Napolean would have been proud of the way Scott S orchestrated the dinner:
Walker S on Buttered French Loaf
John P on Mashed Potatoes (Instant)
Rich H in charge of Salads, and
Beau S Fire Pit / Grill

7 minute per side Porterhouse Steaks, grilled 3" above hot coals, with sides. Perfect! Old guys can cook...

Walker, seemingly possessed with a pyrotechnic death wish, cooks his face and we just watch, sipping the whiskey and enjoying a 38° night under a clear, starry sky. We go home in the morning. Dammit!
6 March 2014 1 Hiker Smurf - Day Pinhoti Trail

6th day in. Spent last night here. Beautiful day, got an easy 10 miles ahead to Choccolocco Creek Shelter. So I'll mosey and enjoy the solitude. Shared the shelter with 5 overnighters from Tuscaloosa. All quality individuals. Especially for Bama fans. ☺ Tried to clean up some of the trash left behind by the weekend parties that someone had here. People, if you pack it in, please pack it out!!! I'm out at Burns Gap in the morning and will resume in a couple of weeks on the section south of Cheaha going south.

My first time. 1.5 mile road closed so we took 3.5. Too much for me. Looking forward to relaxation. - The Wolf
Hey Y'all, it's The Bug here! Moe T Crow, Muttley, & newcomer The Wolf came in with me. We came from the CR500 trailhead because the road we usually come from was blocked for repaving. Yesterday was beautiful with a little rain today. Bout to have my fav. trail breakfast: Fresh Muffins!
We came in for Wolf's first hike. Wanted to do a short hike for him, but he was a trooper with his heavy pack. He will bring less next time! Someone left a garbage bag but with 2 kids and a dog, it would be more of a hassle than I want in the rain. 'Til next time. Moe T Crow
4 April 2014 2 Hikers Mary, Chuck W Pell City Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Hammock Seasoned Hikers, enjoying a day hike. Came to camp at Sweetwater Lake, N hike some of the Pinhoti. Perfect night. Was supposed to rain, but did not. Thanks for the word Col 3:3. The shelter is very nice, peaceful. The creek is so lovely. We are coming back to hang in our hammocks for the night. Be Blessed.
12 April 2014 2 Hikers Reid, Aaron - Day Pinhoti Trail
Our second Pinhoti section hike. Nice and relaxing. Got a bit cold at night, but thankfully the nearby bikini babes kept us warm. Made friends with the native Ewoks and lent our strength in aid to the Great War of the vertically challenged woodland creatures of 2014. Split the spoils of apple pies and other baked goods with the Ewoks and then parted ways. Still no sign of the elusive solar powered Coke machines...
PS Had to hang a full bag of trash last night that looks to have been here quite a while. Can't manage to hike it out with the rest of our gear. Please don't contribute to this... Pack out what you pack in.

Muttley and I brought TB in for her first BP trip. Looks like we will do more. ☺ Rain held off but the glow bugs did look spooky after dark. The new tent even worked pretty good. Need to figure out a way to keep the pads together. TB woke up sleeping on the ground with her pad against the tent walls.
