30 October 2014 1 Hiker - - 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
Just me and my dog. Arrived early in the afternoon. Absolutely perfect weather this today. Been on the Pinhoti for 4 days now. This is my last chance to get out in the wilderness before I start my 9 to 5 job. At 1:30 I spotted a Downy Woodpecker. I couldn't see any red on the back of its head but it didn't have the black and white pattern to fit the Red Cockaded description. I came here to chill and see the autumn foliage. Have not been dissappointed!

21 November 2014 1 Hiker Detour - Many Pinhoti Trail
Detour in early AM. Stayed at church pavillion last night. 3rd cold night in a row. Next is warmth like yesterday, and rain in two days. I might go check out the southern part of the Alabama (not Pinhoti) Trail. I helped John C yesterday and it made me appreciate, once again, the hard work that he does for us and for the trail. I'm from Pennsylvania, so it's hard for me to get down and help, but if you're within an hour's drive, please help John or grab a lopper and do some trail work yourself. I know you'll get great satisfaction in it. Also, please keep the shelters clean. If that is all you do, that is great.

5 December 2014 1 Hiker Mother Nature's Son Leeds, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
13 December 2014 1 Hiker Wayfarer - Many Eastern Continental Trail
Northbound. Started from Jacksonville, Florida on the 8th of October 2014. Did the 518 miles of the Florida Trail across the Panhandle, then up the spur trail through Blackwater River State Park to cross into Alabama just west of Conecuh State Park. The next 170 miles up through Alabama were road walks. However, above Wetumpka, finally got on the newest section of Pinhoti Trail coming down off Flagg Mountain & into small town of Weogufka. Another road walk from there, past Stewartville, connected me again to the Pinhoti Trail at Trammel Trailhead & from there to here.
Heading on to finish Alabama's Pinhoti Trail, & across the state line to continye onto the Georgia Pinhoti Trail, the Benton MacKaye Trail, and then onto the Appalachian Trail.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Isaiah 43:18-19
When God placed this wonderful man in my life, I thought he had lost his mind. But now, I know that God's plan for me is to love like Christ & to serve his kingdom together. We are blessed to serve him through: Celebrate Recovery - Jacksonville. I'm grateful for this Godly man & I've discovered what a treasure he truly is. May I be the helpmate for him. God Indeed, as he continues to mold me. At 50, we both are thankful for the God of 2nd chances!

23 March 2015 1 Hiker Chizzlin Cheswick - Many Eastern Continental Trail
Doing an easy 10 mile day. Started from the Lower Shoal Shelter. Kinda tired & my feet need a much deserved rest. Did 26 miles yesterday in the pouring rain. Started in Miami on New Year's Eve. Hoping to get to the start of the AT in 10 days. Heading up to Maine, then up to Cape Gaspe, Quebec, then flying back to Miami and heading south from where I started to the southernmost point in the US in the Florida Keys. This whole journey should take around 10 months. Called the ECT (Eastern Continental Trail). Been reading this (arrow points to Sparrow 21 March 2015) guy's log book entries for almost 3 months now and looking at the dates he was here, I'm only a couple of days away from catching the bastard.

2 January 2016 2 Hikers Tina / Dozing Doe, Coleman / Rolling Rock - 2½ Days Pinhoti Trail
Hiking from Coleman Lake Parking southward on Pinhoti Trail. Not sure of endpoint. Only hiking 2½ days. Next stop, Sweetwater Lake & possibly tomorrow Pine Glen. Then, hike out tomorrow.
3 January 2016. After hiking on towards Pine Glen, turned back by flooded trail by Sweetwater Lake. Flooding at points was several feet deep. Cross country rough with lots of underbrush. Climbed to top of ridge for less underbrush to clearcut area. Decided to take higher route back to Laurel Shelter for the night. Very cold (~↑ 20s to ↓ 30s) at night. Built large campfire. Plenty of wood up big hill to east of shelter, so you have to work for it. (Best wood is on very top where there has been a clearcutting.)
PS I slept well in shelter (with plenty of layers of clothes.) Coleman was too cold & had to retreat to our emergency shelter... A tent we had set up, just in case.
16 January 2016 2 Hikers Tim, Ben M / Hop - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Hiked from Pine Glen yesterday. Nice shelter, Good water. A bit of rain overnight accompanying temperatures in the mid 30s. A good spot to stop on my section hike with brother Tim. No mice that we noted. Had food hung in shelter so we were concerned, but it wasn't an issue.
PS Noted with sympathy the set of keys labeled "Dodge Van" on a cross key ring. Did a church group have a moment when they reached the trailhead? I hope they had good weather and good patience with the leader who failed to secure the van keys. Despite it all, I hope they were able to laugh.
30 January 2016 3 Hikers Richard, Mike, Dave - Day Pinhoti Trail

Hello to John Calhoun, as well as Mike and Kelly. (I'm assuming you are south of me, as I didn't see an entry in this or Shoal logbook.)

17 July 2016 1 Hiker S Robinett - Day Pinhoti Trail
Last time me and my brother passed through here, we were bearing our mother's ashes to be spread out at Pine Glen. That was her wish. This time, I'm bearing my brother's to the same spot. This is a sad, lonely path I walk. These woods have always been a home away from home for us. There are too few of us left. I shall remain for a time, but I must return to the civilized world to the younger ones that are still in need of raising.
Please enjoy my story and what nature has to offer, Godspeed my fellow travellers.

Colours....
My brother and I had many differences. Our mother had often stated that we were as different as night is to day. Like ships passing in the dark, our paths rarely crossed in our young life. Mother had expressed that one of the things we brothers shared with each others besides blood, was our perception on the world. She had often said neither of us saw the world in colour. We never really understood then, but things change. Some may argue or disagree with the following statements, but it is what it is, or was...
My brother supposedly seen the world in shades of grey, a neutral tone between black and white. Not necesarily gloomy, but more like a melting pot of people and ideas. A way of life, you could say, where everyone had the same potential. I on the other hand, I only seen the world in black and white, right or wrong, yes or no. There was no in between. I miss the philosophical debates and arguments we often had.
In the past decade, my brother and I were growing more akin to one another. With the help of our wives and all the children that came into our life, we slowly started to see the world in colour. There was more to this life than just our outlook. There was awhole new colour spectrum to embrace. It was beautiful...
Sadly, with the passing of my brother and my mother, the colours do not seem as vibrant as they once were. Another thing we shared was our love of music. Even though I may not see things as clearly at the moment, my hearing is still good. I believe it is possible to see the sounds and hear colours....
Well I'm listening.

29 July 2016 1 Hiker L Baxter - Day Pinhoti Trail
In these chaotic times, the woods is where I find my peace. I can walk for hours, alone, where my thoughts can go off into the universe. It is also in this solitude that I hear answers to questions I have not even asked, and some that have troubled me for some time. As Charles Burroughs put it -
"I come to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order."
Just passing through, L Baxter

Friday the 13th. First hike of the new year, third time to this shelter. It has become my refuge, a place where I can come to recharge. Society and all its nonsense gets to me, drags me into the muck. Nature is where I go to free my mind of all the negativity. I love to walk barefoot in the woods, it's like an energy exchange. I breathe out all the bs and absorb all the peaceful energy from the earth through my feet. If you've never done it, you should try it... Dip your toes in the icy cold creek while you're at it. If you read this, think of me and send some positive vibes my way. I need all I can get. God Bless and Namaste.

Love your writing & may our paths cross. SR

Soul wounds are the hardest to heal
Soul wounds are the hardest to conceal

With that being said, I have embarked upon a sojourn. The path I travel, I have not tread upon in many of years. I left something on this path that I thought I no longer needed. I left this "thing" in the hopes it would help the next traveller. Perhaps I was mistaken. I shall return to claim what was left. If it is not there, then I know it has served its purpose and I am no longer in need of it. Whether it is there or not, I know my journey continues. I will look to the horizon with a determined mind and hope with my heart.

Thoughts and Reflections: Occasionally we find ourselves at this impass of where we want to be and where we need to be. It is my belief that you can if carefully done live in both worlds even if it's in small sections at a time. So if you are here, good for you! There is only here right now.

10 boy scouts and 2 adult leaders stayed the night at Laurel Shelter. We are doing a training hike (Sections 9 & 10 on the Pinhoti Trail) (April 2-6th). We will be embarking on a high adventure this summer hiking approximately 70-90 miles in northern New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. Our last 2 training hikes were on the AT. We chose to go somewhere different that offered variety of terrain other than the straight up & down we found on the AT. Also, the AT is heavily traversed especially sinceit is spring break in Georgia for our area. We have seen one other person. This trail is a beautiful hike. We stayed at Lower Shoal Shelter last night and now this shelter. Both offered amazing views. We are having an amazing time!
9 April 2017 1 Hiker Greenman - Day Pinhoti Trail
Green Man Great on the Pinhoti. Doing Pine Glen to Coleman. Hiked last weekend to Burns. So far no sign of "Pickleboots", although did see a huge frog disguised as a pile of poo and a huge black snake! This section makes 16 miles this year and next weekend doing Dugger. Expect all long 12 mile of just steep side mountain stretch of no water 'til it comes down to Terrapin. If you have to poop get a big flat rock then throw it off the mountain afterwards or do an ape hanger! Happy Trails!

Passing through from Key West, Fl, and Portland, Or, respectively. We're pleased to have this shelter available for a quick overnighter while in the area. Greatly appreciate whoever left the tick defense spray, as we were bombarded by ticks on the way in. (Must be hatching season for those buggers, 'cause most were barely visible to the naked eye.) Aside for frequent stops for tick checks, the Pinhoti's meandering trail was delightful. Respect, Jim & David

Ed not Milkman here for a breat on a 3 night section from Pine Glen north. Forest is lush with greenery after controlled burns and good rain this June. Saw a coyote and a deer this morning. Nice wildflowers too, and a few early blackberries ripe. 1 single ripe blueberry. Most common flower now are golden coreopsis, white toadflax, purple milkwort (looks like clover) and other ragworts, unknown indigo plant with large pale blue flowers, and a spindly purple flowered stalk in pea family with almost no leaves.
20 June 2017 1 Hiker Rev Lostboy - 3 Nights Pinhoti Trail
Started @ Pine Glen northbound. Probably 3 nights? Today I flushed a big group of turkeys just before the lake (south of the lake). Great morning to be out. Haven't seen another hiker but did see 2 people fishing @ the lake. Saw some berries turning blue but was afraid to try them. Grew close to the ground back by the clear cut area. Blessings.

Wonderful hostel! The people are pretty all right, too. ☺ Talladega is a cute town with a couple (real close) coffee shops, grocery store/CVS?post office next to the hostel, and a Walmart a ways down the road (We've walked there, too) if you want.

We're on our way N from Flagg Mountain, will connect to the Benton MacKaye in Georgia, then up the AT as far north as weather allows. My brother just said "I might leave you at Springer... Do you think there's a way I can stop back at Talladega on my way back?" You reading this Speedo/Grunt? "It was like a second home." Yeah, yeah, brotherski... You only say that because it's rained our past 7 trail days.
Happy hiking! Sail Away & Bork (bork bork bork bork bork)

Arrived @ approx. 5pm yesterday afernoon (Hiking south from Choccolocco Shelter - Approx. 10-12 miles). It was a very humind, hot day with high probablity in low 90s. Low last night probably around low to mid 60s. Full moon lovely but something interrupted sleep both nights. (like a flashlight shining in one's face.) Saw deer, opossum, frogs, bluebirds, hawk & turkey.

My first backpacking experience. Hiked in from Pine Glen Campground. Pretty warm for September, but not too bad. Had a coyote walk up nearly to the shelter - then pee, scratch off with its rear feet, then leave. I never saw it again. I really enjoyed spending the night at the shelter. Had a fire and plenty of nature to keep me company.

Wow, what a day. Not a drop of rain yet my feet were wet from the moment I left the last shelter, this morning until now. The trail is so flooded out, Crazy! Tried walking through some of the flood (up to my waist at one point.) Anyway, 11 miles in 9 hours. Glad I'm not in a rush. Glad for this shelter. Pat L

Pictures. Pictures of you is one of my favorite songs from the Cure. Sommetimes I don't like actual pictures. Thay hold memories and stir emotions. I suppose that is why I have very few pictures. Pictures taken today seem to only capture a smile or a happy time. Some are just a visage that those that captured are happy. Pictures rarely capture the sadness in a person. But the eyes do not lie. Still-framed picture taken, even of beautiful scenic views, pale in comparison to what I see all around me in this beautiful forest. So with remembering the law of the rarely, I will take onlly memories and leave only footprints as I travel this bbeautiful world.
