Happy New Year! Started at FS500 yesterday around 1:30pm. Hiked to Lower Shoals Shelter & slept there. Woke up and hiked in the rain all day until we got here. Staying here tonight. Going back to FS500 in the morning. Had a great New Year's backpacking trip.

This is our first time on the Pinhoti Trail. It's in great condition and the shelters are awesome. We had to spend two days at the Chief Ladiga Campground due to a real turd floater. Spent New Years under the porch of the camp store. It's supposed to be a cold night tonight. Around 20°F. I hope we don't have to huddle together for warmth... Gross. Happy Hiking. Go State!

Been hiking since Porter's Gap. The terrain is the best for a warm up for the AT. I really have enjoyed my hike. We are due for bad weather this evening. So I thank those who gave their time & energy & money for this beautful shelter. Mother Nature's Son, I look forward to meeting you. Caveman speaks of you often as we walk up this trail. Once again, thank you for this lovely place. Until we return, and we will...

April 2011
Laurel 1 April 2011 1 Hiker JB & Sonny - Many Pinhoti Trail
On a very slow thru hike with my dog. Started Bulls Gap on 11 March. Stopped @ 431 Trailhead on 18 March, 60 miles, took a break. Started back on 431 Trailhead 28 March. My dog is the reason I've been going so slow (Not Really!)
I hiked much of this trail 10 years ago right after high school. I got lost, way overpacked, and had a miserable outing. So much better with a clear trail, accurate map, light gear, and best friend.
This was probably the most scenic day so far. Noodles with a can of donated chicken for dinner (Thank You trail people.)
Choccolocco 10 April 2011 2 Hikers JB, Sonny - Many Pinhoti Trail
Stayed here last night. Didn't expect an elementary aged boy scout troop. Interesting night. On my way through to Jackson Chapel Road, from Bull's Gap.
Dugger Mtn 11 April 2011 1 Hiker JB, Sonny - Many Pinhoti Trail
Passing by on a thru hike. Man, the Dugger Mountain Wilderness is gorgeous, but hikers will not find any fire ring or established campsites (in the wilderness.) Those are illegal and I just removed about 5 that were in the wilderness. I also hiked out the tin cans, Jolly Rancher wrappers, napkins, cigarette butts, and aerosol can that was around the sites. Remember wilder sites are by law meant to remain free of man's use or signs of previous work. So if you do camp there, break up your fire ring and for God's sake hike out your trash. Thanks.
PS The shelter is in great shape. Thank Y'all.

PS Storm came in @ 8pm. Lots of 🗲 to the north and south, but no strikes in camp site. Had rain & strong winds, shelter was great protection! Heard sirens going off, or was it tornados.

My son and I ran a group of turkey out as we were coming in. Had a perfetly clear night to poke around in the fire, nice and cold too. We have never taken advantage of a trail shelter on any of our other hikes but it was very comfortable, a nice change from the ground. Probably won't pass up the chance to sleep in another one.

After the last two days of rain and snow last night, I rejoice to see the sun this morning. It reminds me of John Denver's song "Praise God I'm a Country Boy" where he sings... "Sun coming up, I've got cakes on the griddle, Life ain't nothing but a funny, funny riddle..." It's going to be a good day. 28°F this morning. Came from Lower Shoals Shelter, 11 miles. Started at the beginning to the south and have seen only 3 people. And they were hunting. Oh well; It's very peaceful. BTW nice trail shelter sign... Crow checking in. It really flooded yesterday! I walked Dugger Mountain with thunder all around and sheets of rain coming down. I have to admit I was a little worried. Right before the shelter northbound I crossed 6 rushing rivers. I am a fairly big man and I had a little concern about my footing in the current. I hope everyone is okay after that. They had the sirens and an announcement for warning even. But now the sun is bearing nto the shelter (BTW Thanks Volunteers!) On to Maine!

Then "it's oh so quiet... It's oh so still, you're all alone an so peaceful until..." (That was a Björk reference. If you didn't catch it, I couldn't help it.)
Well, before that I was hiking with Princess Doah but well, that didn't work out too well... I took too many coffee breaks for her liking, and I felt like a horrible zombie trying to hike 20 miles every day. Yuk. So now I think I'll take a nap... Just got to make 10 more miles today.

Saturday. I set out Monday from High Point and 6 days and sixteen miles later I am here. I sure ain't setting any Terrapin land speed records. Even if they have two broke legs, and that is for sure and for certain. Now at Oakey Mountain Shelter the sign said that there was reliable water here but I have yet to find it. And it I don't ± could be in trouble.

"Turn out the lights, the party's over, all good things must come to an end."
Found water at the fire road a ¼ mile down hill. I was exhausted and spent the night. Realized I had an extra day of rationsand ate more to get energy. Built what could have been a fire but I went to sleep before I could light it. It'll be there for the next hiker. Weather said thunderstorms on Thursday so I'm making for Coleman's Lake and having my wingman pick me up there. No sense in sitting my last day out due to rain so I'll go in a day early.
This trip has been exhaustingagonizing, backbreaking... Need to figure out when I can do it again, starting from Coleman's Lake and heading south, of course.

Monday. Eight days out and may pack it in by Wednesday. TStorms Thursday and I don't want to be caught in one, but until I can get to where there is cell service and contact my wingman it still looks like Friday for pickup. Started out this trip last Monday and I thought that a 15 mile day would be the average. Rude awakening. Made Maxwell Gap by Wednesday morning, Oakey Mountain Shelter by Wednesday night, and because of thunderstorms I held up at Oakey Mountain on Thursday. No T-storms but it did rain until noon. Friday I crossed Oakey Mountain and Saturday made North Dugger Mountain Shelter. Sunday was a push to cross Dugger Mountain and make the Pinky Burns Trailhead. And I made it right after sundown. So I'm fixing to fill up my water bottle and trudge towards Coleman's Lake.

He's not acting like I'm in his home or anything; He's just hanging out singh! Is it always this cloudy in Alabama??? Alabama, Vampire's welcome. The wood doesn't like to burn here, is that what the alchohol is for? Whoever made the juggling balls and instructions kudos to you. Ingenious. The Pinhoti has been beautiful. I started the ECT hobbling and limping my first month. I now run uphill sections with a 65 pound pack. Maybe I'll make the AT weather deadline after all. Not looking forward to large packs of hikers, though. I love the solitude (Most of the time) of the Florida Trail and the Pinhoti. JSU 5 JSU students here for our outdoor pursuits expedition "Backpacking" class. It's been a great trip so far. We have all earned trail names. Started from Pine Glen Campground. Stopped at Laurel Shelter on 14 May 2013 & passed through Shoal Creek. Ate at the church for a quick lunch. Passed some friends on horseback and trucked on about 5 miles. Set up camp in the middle of nowhere woods. Hiked from there to here & our teacher left us to stay here for some real "experience" backpacking. We're pretty sure he's chilling with his girlfriend, drinking cold beer, & laughing at our smelly butts still in the woods. We made a huge pot of Mac-n-Cheese for dinner on our backpacking stoves. Filtered water... Then broke filter... Now it's about 9:30pm. We're all down for the night...

Which is a huge surprise considering DJ (Trail name Sir-Bathes-A-Lot / Frying Pan) stays up dancing around the fire yelling at sasquatch & pushing down dead trees while saying all types of profanity... It's like he doesn't sleep...

AZ (Trail name Cookie) Just joined us here in the shelter. He was tenting it until he realized he'd have to pack up his tent tomorrow, instead of just waking up & heading out quick like the rest of us plan to do.

Then we have Matt (Trail Name Bammer). He loves Alabama football!

Then there's Blake (Trail Name Trail Diva). In class he seemed high maintenance, showed up late, and acted like a dive: hence the trail name... He hates it... He fished, had no luck.

Then there's me Beth (Trail Name Den Mother). I've backpacked about 471 miles of the AT so this isn't my 1st rodeo. Did the Pinhoti for the first time @ age 14 with girl scouts & then segments near Cheaha with dad.

Weather couldn't have been better. Highs in the 80s, lows in the 50s.

Great class at a great university. We all expect to get As! You hear that Dr Jimmy? 😉

I'm planning to return with a few friends later this summer!

We're looking forward to hiking out tomorrow, eating well, and showering!

PS Sorry about the self portraits on the shelter... DJ got bored...

Get me out of here!💗

Man I've been walking for 4 years. Backpacking from place to place. I am running from my seepd addiction. Trying not to slip back into a life of smuggling aliens across the border. It was an experience of a lifetime. Last person I talked to was my brother, a former college football player, now traveller. We taked about food, lady parts, and alligators for about 3½ hours. That was 13 days ago. I did meet a beaver by the lake the other day. He bit my ankle & elbow because I tried to cuddle with him. I think I am going to leave here in about 15 days. Been trying to place a spell on the shelter so I won't be so lonely at night. I buried a wiggie board under the shelter. It should pick up about 3:30am, but I won't get my hopes up. I have tried the last three days: no luck. -🚶 the walk -they are always watching

Sunday. Bugs were definately biting last night! Have about 10.2 miles ahead today. I've been sectioning the Pinhoti since September & made it this far. ☺ I really ♡ the Pinhoti & its solitude & subtle beauty. It rained on us for about 8 miles yesterday. Really hard, really loud (thunder & lightning) & boots, socks, clothes - all still wet. Oh well...
Really disapointed in the JSU Backpacking Class. They left the shelter a wreck. Dumped food everywhere - trash, toilet paper & body wipes, crap they didn't want to pack out... If you're readingthis & new to backpacking - Please pack out your trash & leave a shelter cleaner than you found it.
Kudos to Mother Nature's Son & the others who help maintain this trail. You do a fantastic job & are appreciated.

From the instigators perspective:
Hiked in from the road / trailhead for my bachelor party. 9 of us in total. Our coolers' handles broke on the way in, so we are leaving it here. Hiked up to the dam and saw a ~25-30 pound snapper near the top of the dam. He did not want to be bothered.
Our list of booze:
The Kraker x1
Dickel x1
Jager x1
Captain Morgan x1
Old Forester x2
Even William x2
Bookers x1
Sailor Jerry's x1
First night I lashed together a tripod to use over the fire to cook... It was not used. Late we went out to the dam to gaze at the stars. Clear skies. We could see the Milky Way. Later we played Phase 10 and got hammered. Woke up fairly early Saturday Morning to a great cup of coffee. Played awretched game of croquet. A much lighter day of drinking and eating. Naps have been had by all. Fairly prolific fishing and turned my tripod into a throne. Throne was put into fire. Good shooting with the sling shot at cans that we found.
List of weapons:
Slingshot x1
Spear x1
Machette x3
Hatchet x2
Knives x plenty
Guns x 2
We had all the booze and weapos piled on the building's outdoor table. It was dubbed "The Barsonal." Which in turn at the sight of it scared off 5 other hikers. Good for them. We are drunken smelly messy babies. Sorry for any residual taint smells. I had a fantastic time with my boys. Dueces

Sweendog - Hike in was good. Thank god I didn't have to carry the cooler. We have consumed more alchohol than any person should. Everything has gonew well so far, but then again someone just opened the Kraken...

Chucky Dick - Brought a cooler full of ice. Made it 50 yards, almost passed out, quit carrying ice. Still almost passed out. Realized how out of shape I am. Got wasted. Got stoned. Played phase ten all night. Had a circle jerk... by myself... Punched Bad Dog in the ass repeatedly at the request of the instigator. Peace Bitches! Chucky Dick.

Showtime - The nine men met at a bowling alley. After ruining everyone's day at Jefferson's wings, burgers, and oysters, we passed the local Sodomites in the midst of "Field Fest." No doubt a pagan ritual involving sacrificial virgins and a pumpkin headed demi god. The hike in was fine for some but not all. The cooler proved to be too great a burden to itself. We lost some eggs, and the Pringles were never found.
Since arriving, though, our time has been filled with the usual fare. Laughter, profanity, racist diatribes, good food, high fives, sexy time dances, and enough alcohol for three great American novels. It hasn't rained yet, but I suspect a storm tomorrow. Either rain or a fierce deluge of blood and blackness from each of our assholes. It will be a tide of Lovecraftian horror. But the Waffle House beforehand will be worth it. All in all, we have had a better time than you ever could. The men in the gutter always do. See you in hell. -Showtime.

Drinking again... Hike back will be easier. That guy Matt 6 October.

Great time, except for snake versus snake. "Hail the serpent." Petty 10/16/13

Well, because I purchased all the food and carried it in my bag and then assisted in carrying the cooler (Ark of the Covenant style), I'm not helping carry shit else out. Fun time. -The Face.

Slept at Laurel Shelter this night. Hiked up - slightly south of Lower Shoal Shelter (north of Heflin). I resupplied at Heflin, having started my Alabama Pinhoti Section Hike from Bull's Gap, near Sylacauga. It was likely in the 20sF tonight because last night 12 November was said to be 25°F. No one here but me. Big fire, red beans, rice, tuna and calm stream over yonder. Great shelter. Weather, these past few days, has been sunshine and blue skies. Aw Yeah!
Choccolocco 14 November 2013 1 Hiker Starfish - Few Days Pinhoti Trail
Hiked up from Laure Shelter. Heading north on Pinhoti. Great clean shelter here at Choccolocco! Trail was great / clean, but damn near treacherous approaching this shelter. Looked like Forest Service is doing a controlled forest burn. I saw three areas of large smoke on approach with a chopper hovering over the burn sites. Mid to low 70°F's, I guess. Mid 40°F's tonight. Clear starry night! Yes indeed! Big moon, almost full! Last few day, I watched the moon phases on these clear nights. ☺ Starfish
Dugger Mtn 15 November 2013 1 Hiker Starfish - Many Pinhoti Trail
Friday. Arrived about 3pm. I came from Choccolocco Creek Shelter. This hike or section, Choccolocco to Dugger Mountain Shelter, was closed since there was a wildfire about Thursday. When I hiked to Choccolocco Thursday night I'd seen lots of smoke. Trail was closed near Burns Trailhead. CR55. I passed a guy; he said coming south the trail was closed but the fire was out. I heard people by Burns Trailhead; but looked around and decided to hike it. Fire was out, smokey areas... I thought waht the hell!? If the hills were on fire (They were not.) then I'd not have kept hiking. From CR55 on Pinhoti, only 30 minutes uphill was burnt; then trail was OK. About 12:00pm there's been a ton of cloudy weather, gray skies and light rain. I guess there'll be no fire for me tonight. This looks like a great shelter & thanks to all the Pinhoti Trail Maintainers. Well marked & cut up! Still heading north tomorrow, hopefully rain will pass. I lost a camo sleeping bag cover on Dugger Mountain. If found, enjoy it.

Fish Cloudy. Temperature is, I'll say, mid / low 60°F. Slept last night at North Dugger Mountain Shelter... Heading north, between Choccolocco and Dugger Mountain Shelter. I lost a camo sleeping bag cover on the hike down Dugger probably. So enjoy if you find it! Just eating lunch and passing through.

Just missed those guys ↑ by a day or one. It has been one arduous journey from GA-ME-GA-Ala. Finally, 15 years or so, I lost count. Every year I do as much as I can from 15 December - 30 December andone state left. I hear this one isn't even totally finished to Florida, so I may stop before Florida.
After this, probably a year or two from now, It's off to the west coast and yes, I'm walking.
Just wanted to say to Mother Nature's Son that I hope you have a nice trip out west.
I had a nice time talking to you and hope to assist you with some trail work. Take great care.

Today is the first day of winter. The air, however, sure did fool me today. It was 75° today. Misty most of the day. This evening is supposed to bring severe thunderstorms and tomorrow it will rain all day. My dog Lou and I might just take tomorrow off and take a shelter day. He likes those days? He gets to eat all day. Who wouldn't like that.
We are just on the trail until Christmas. The dog and I must see the family but I thought it would drive me insane if I saw one more "Big Sale" commercial.
So here we are.
Good luck to you all.

Awesome! And I'm not talking about the weather. Someone left a hawk feather pen. Feels right on! Today has rained every hour of itself. No worries though, we hung out in the shelter all day, smoked, and played games for treats. Lou likes treats. The water sources are over the top, and I mean literally. There are little rivers everywhere over the top of this range. So we stayed 2 nights, had fun and won't forget it. Our Christmas gift to one another. The gift of explorations. By the way the bats freaked me out until I figured out what the noise was. As Lou would say... Be good.

Wednesday 5:00pm. Today is the 12th day of our GET thru hike which we will follow up with a southbound hike of the AT to create the first hike of the Great Appalachian Loop. We started from Flagg Mountain and are on our way to New York to the North Country Scenic Trail. We started this morning in heavy rain, which turned into an ice storm, and now we are getting heavy snow. WTF Alabama? Tomorrow is a 20 mile day to Dugger Mountain Shelter, then we're off to Cave Springs, Ga for a re-supply. I'm excited to be hiking through the snow. Jo & Bart, we found your entry in here from your thru hike last year! 22 January 2013. Right now we are both just sitting in the shelter listening to all the branches falling in the woods and waiting for the Bikini Babes of 4 June 2010. We also saw a starved and frozen rattlesnake by the lake today, as well as the birdy from 3 May 2013. Reading through this trail log has been very entertaining. I wish we had something to leave here for the next hikers. And we're still hoping for a case of beer at the next shelter!

Our second Pinhoti section hike. Nice and relaxing. Got a bit cold at night, but thankfully the nearby bikini babes kept us warm. Made friends with the native Ewoks and lent our strength in aid to the Great War of the vertically challenged woodland creatures of 2014. Split the spoils of apple pies and other baked goods with the Ewoks and then parted ways. Still no sign of the elusive solar powered Coke machines...

I made the short trek from North Dugger Shelter to here this morning. It was an awesome hike! It rained all last night and this morning, so everytime the wind blew the leaves, I got a little wet. It was a misty, foggy morning. Especially on top & around Mt Oakey. It was beautiful, though. My journey on the Pinhoti started around the train tracks at Shoal Creek. It has taken me 5 days to get here and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Someone is picking me up Friday morning and I will hate to leave this beautiful trail. At the start of the trek I wrote Psalm 23 in my notebook and have been memorizing it along the trail, so I shall leave y'all with it.
Psalm 23
"The Lord is my shepard, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of rightiousness for his name's sake. Even thoug I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me: your rod & your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You annoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the lord forever."
Dugger Mtn 29 October 2014 1 Hiker Tyler? - Many Pinhoti Trail
I started my journey Saturday morning at the Shoal Creek Trailhead by the railroad tracks. It was my brother's bachelor trip and we all camped out at the Lower Shoal Shelter Saturday night. Sunday I parted ways with them and hiked up to Sweetwater Lake, which was beautiful! I hung out there and later that day hiked up to Coleman Lake and found another beautiful camp Monday night. From Coleman I made the trek here. It was some serious hiking in one day, and I ended up having to use my headlamp for the last hour of the trek. It is rainging today, and I plan to ease my way to Oakey Mountain Shelter tonight, and finish up the Pinhoti Thursday evening. My original plan was not to hike the Pinhoti to the end, but to simply spend a week in the woods with God, but He placed the desire to finish it heading north. Saturday morning, my brother will run the Pinhoti 100. That's a 100 mile race, on foot, from Pine Glen Camp to Sylacauga. If anyone reads this in the next 3 days, Please say a prayer for Nathan's safety. Thank you to whoever built this shelter, for protecting me from the rain. Y'all have a blessed day.

Pinhoti Heflin to Georgia
October 2014
Lower Shoal 30 October 2014 1 Hiker Anonymous - Many Pinhoti Trail
Joined the Pinhoti at Heflin yesterday afternoon and hiked 'til near dark - Camped in the woods off the trail... Slow goings today. Reached here in the afternoon because I hung out near the campsite too long getting rid of the chill I got in the middle of the night. Glad to get fresh water again. Will be hiking through the night to make up for lost time and my inefficiency today. Planning to reach at least the lake or Pine Glen before stopping. Looking forward to finding someplace to either fish or pick up provisions to tide me over... A heavy pack takes quite a bit of energy to haul. Going to see if I can't lighten my load somehow...
Heading northeast into Georgia.

October 2014
Laurel 30 October 2014 1 Hiker - - 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
Just me and my dog. Arrived early in the afternoon. Absolutely perfect weather this today. Been on the Pinhoti for 4 days now. This is my last chance to get out in the wilderness before I start my 9 to 5 job. At 1:30 I spotted a Downy Woodpecker. I couldn't see any red on the back of its head but it didn't have the black and white pattern to fit the Red Cockaded description. I came here to chill and see the autumn foliage. Have not been dissappointed!

Lower Shoal 11 November 2014 3 Maintainers Kenny, Tom C, Van P - 4 Nights Pinhoti Trail
John: a special thank you for all the work you do. It really looks great.
Kenny, Tom C, Van P stayed here: so nice.
We started at Pinky Burns Trailhead Saturday November 8th. Me, Tom, Van, Lynn C, dog.
We cleared some: there are a lot of blowdowns from Choccolocco Lake to 540, cleared from here to 553 (blacktop) with a bow saw and a lot of grunting.
We hope to come back and help soon.
Tom C says we are tired and wore out (old).
Great hiking except for the hill and the one before that, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
Nice hike, colors (maples), Gentian (purple wildflower by creek) owls, great sounds, good fire, good Jack Daniels + apple cider.

I might go check out the southern part of the Alabama (not Pinhoti) Trail. I helped John C yesterday and it made me appreciate, once again, the hard work that he does for us and for the trail. I'm from Pennsylvania, so it's hard for me to get down and help, but if you're within an hour's drive, please help John or grab a lopper and do some trail work yourself. I know you'll get great satisfaction in it. Also, please keep the shelters clean. If that is all you do, that is great.

Thursday. Sad that people who love hiking would violate the common rules of taking out their own trash.
Long distance hiking through area. Started 8 October 2014 from Jacksonville, Florida. 518 miles on Florida Trail, then up through Alabama to here.
Connecting to Geargia Pinhoti & Benton MacKaye Trail to link up to the AT around the 10th of January.

Northbound. Started from Jacksonville, Florida on the 8th of October 2014. Did the 518 miles of the Florida Trail across the Panhandle, then up the spur trail through Blackwater River State Park to cross into Alabama just west of Conecuh State Park. The next 170 miles up through Alabama were road walks. However, above Wetumpka, finally got on the newest section of Pinhoti Trail coming down off Flagg Mountain & into small town of Weogufka. Another road walk from there, past Stewartville, connected me again to the Pinhoti Trail at Trammel Trailhead & from there to here.
Heading on to finish Alabama's Pinhoti Trail, & across the state line to continye onto the Georgia Pinhoti Trail, the Benton MacKaye Trail, and then onto the Appalachian Trail.

From there, a roadwalk past Stewartville, Al connects again to the Pinhoti Trail at Trammel Trailhead. Then the Pinhoti goes through Bull's gap, Porter's Gap, Adama Gap, Cheaha State Park, Highway 431, FS500S Railroad Trailhead, Pine Glen, Burns Trailhead, and to here.

There were a few large trees on the trail up here. This shelter is trashed out currently. We will take what we can.

Day 1
Started from Cave Creek Trailhead on Saturday 20 December 2014 Mile 79.1. Passed Blue Mountain Shelter. Camped at Hillabee Creek. Great place for reliable water. No fire that night. Around 18:00 a doe came within 15 feet to 20 feet before she realize me then took off. Pretty cool. I went to sleep in my new superfly tarp and ridgerunner hammock with my Thermarest R5.7 pad. "Best Night Ever." The pad reflects the heat, even with the cheap Ozark 32° down sleeping bag from Walmart.
Checkout Warbonnet Hammock beat sleeping ground.
Day 2 Sunday 21 December 2014
Saw a few Turkey and Squirrel. Not a real eventful day. Crossed over US431 and made camp at mile 96.9 Spring Bog Crossing. Had a little rain but dry.
Day 3 Monday 22 December 2014
Back on trail. I was hoping that the proposed Greenstone Shelter had been built: it wasn't. The weather forecasted rain so! Instead of making camp I went on to Lower Shoal Shelter. Hoping to make it before the rain. Nope I didn't make it. Started to rain around 15:00 but got lucky and made it here at 16:00. Sleep in shelter. I miss my hammock. Even though I was warm my back kept me awake most of the night.
Day 4 Tuesday 23 December 2014
Stayed at shelter all day. Dried out gear. Made small fire to dry socks. Made Coffee, beef jerky soup, and had a lazy day.
Day 5 Wednesday 24 December 2014
Headed back to Cave Creek Trailhead. Hoping to stay at Blue Mountain Shelter on Friday, December 26. 27 December hike 2 miles to car and go home. Hope the weather is clear the next 2-3 days. If not, Oh Well. That's called camping.
Enjoy the trail. Stay safe.

Arrived and saw cooler and sleeping bag. Thought someone was here. I think they just left it here. I haven't seeb any hikers today. Monday, I guess. Pretty, flowing hiking. Lots of water around.

Blue Mtn 12 April 2015 1 Hiker In Fuego - Day Pinhoti Trail
Hiking the "Southern Appalachian Trail." Started down in Florida. Feels like the first real trail shelter. (Florida: a floor and a roof does not a shelter make, especially with your torrential rain & wind.) Anyway, love Blue Mountain Shelter, feels like it belongs in the landscape & loving the Pinhoti Trail so far. Sorry I have to be back to work at the end of the month. Always happy in the Mountains.
Laurel 16 April 2015 1 Hiker In Fuego - Day Pinhoti Trail
Was planning on going on to Choccolocco, but then it started raining. Thank you for the shelter! Headed to Springer mountain, then sadly back to work.

Making very slow progress with the wet weather. Oh well, I guess I should just enjoy the time spent in the shelters. Pouring rain now.
Arrow points to previous entry.
Also thought someone was in the shelter with cooler & bivy/tent thing. But seems to be just abandoned. Sorry to see cooler full of trash!

Came in for an overnighter with The Fatman and The Marine. Got my total pack weight to be under 15 pounds. Made the hike much nicer. The logging of the trees north of the shelter was sad to see. Too many TP flowers near the shelter. Bury that stuff, folks! -Moe T Crow

Choccolocco 22 September 2015 1 Hiker Erin B / Fancy Pants - Many Pinhoti Trail
Southbound on a through hike. Been nice so far. Had some short mile days, one in the rain. For real saw a scorpion on a picnic table. There was a water moccasin in the boulders on the spillway. Watch out if you get water there. I stopped on my glasses day 1. Lost the cup to my water bottle. Then threw a rock over a branch to hang the food, but I was standing on the rope and it bounced back and hit me on the head real hard. I also lost my headlamp last night. So far, so good.

Pretty shelter. We are on a southbound thru hikeof the Pinhoti. If you are going north, lots of poison ivy. I filled up on water at lunch, haven't seen any since. Have not seen any ghosts, bears, jaguars, or such. Did see a huge alligator in the stream. Ifthey tray to bite you, just grab them by the tongue. (Works on bears too!) I wish people would quit packing out their trash. Try to let it accumulate for the rats! Please.

Map If you are northbound here is what I and my partner from the previous entry can offer the hiker that is reading this:
- Water up here for sure.
- Only one water source between here and FS55.
- Gets rough and is not well blazed starting a few miles up, lasting a mile or so.
- If you encounter a bunch of old fire rings and know you are off trail; you may want to head west (We did.)
- Have fun
- Here's your next 8 miles:
Drop 500 feet next 1.25 miles.
From 1.25 milesand on very rugged.

October 25th 3pm - 27th am. Rain. Locals warned us of possible flash flooding so decided to stay in shelter couple nights. On a 9 day backpacking trip starting @ Section 12 going south. So thankful for the shelter to stay dry. Very Peaceful, breezy & rainy. Looking forward to cooler weather and clear. Can feel the temperature dropping. Thinking of all who have passed this way taking shelter for the night and soaking in all that God has to offer. How blessed are we. Hurricane winds, limbs and trees dropped. Thankful we set up tent in shelter. One limb dropped up on roof - Uneasy night. I will lie down and sleep in peace. For you alone, O Lord make me dwell in safety. PS4:8

On our way. ☺ Started at High Point. Got caught in the hurricane winds but thankfully we set up our tent in Oakey Mountain Shelter. Trees and limbs fell all around us. One landed on top of shelter - No damage but was right above us. Thankful for these shelters. On a 9 day trip, heavy packs make for hard workout on climbs. Very peaceful here. Had best night sleep so far. Thank you Jesus!! So far only one day with no rain. Enjoying our time together.

Arrived 29th pm; left am. On a 9 day backpacking trip. Endured Hurricane Winds in Oakey Shelter. Trees & limbs falling all around us. Thank God we set our tent up in the shelter. Large limb fell on the shelter right above us. Getting from Section 12 to here was tough with our heavy packs. It has rained at some time every day so far but one. Clothes wet, nothing will dry out, blisters. Ready for this day with the sun that's starting to shine bright. Going as God leads today. Was really surprised to see food in the shelter. I guess bears, raccoons, mice, etcetera are not a problem here. Sad to see so many grafitti on this shelter. Sad for the hard work of the people who built it. Heard coyotes several times during the night. Thankfully, they didn't come here. Got close. Owls were talking. ☺ "Jesus Christ is Lord"

13-15 November 2015. Great shelter for the weekend. Feels good to get away from school work. Drove from Tuscaloosa, Al. Got a very late start on Friday, and a flat tire on the way didn't help! Got to the Cheaha Trailhead parking lot right at dusk. 2 miles to the shelter was quite the adventure in the dark! Lost the trail several times, and what a relief it was coming across the shelter! Came with my roommate Blaine. First hike together this semester! Temps dropped into the low 30s at night, glad to be out of the wind. Genuine ~~ e out in the wilderness. Hiked 2 miles in the dark with Tom and finally found BMS! Immediate;y started a fire and ate dinner. Temperature was in the 30s, bundled up in the loft.
14 November. Woke up to a cold, crisp morning! Beautiful day, started a fire and relaxed in my eno! Built a bow and arrow, I'll let you know how it ~~ ... doesn't work, need to find a new pie ~~~d. Heading to the top of the mountain to ~~~ and get a good view!
The peple below came ~~ were trail maintenance. Just ate lunch with Tom at Bald Rock. Great View! Just got back and the trail maintenance decided to sign under my unfinished entry. LOL. Starting another fire, getting ready for dinner. Made dinner over the fire. Rice, tuna, carrots. Finished off with dessert: Jerky & Cheese. Late night snack two Jolly Ranchers!! Going to bed, waking up, and heading back home. Great weekend escape! Signing off.

Thru hiking 335 miles of the Pinhoti Trail. This is day 3 and I am at mile mark 81.2 I believe. Making good progress. Today's hike got shortened because of rainy weather. Hiked 9 miles in the rain and hung out at the state park store for a while, and dried my things. Beautiful trail, althought haven't seen too many people on the trail (Actually, none.)... Blisters are coming in as usual. Can't wait to be done! Adios amigos.

He seems to know the area pretty well. 2 more days before I take a zero day and resupply. Looking forward to a hot shower and finishing my through hike up into Georgia.
