Long Distance Hikers
2016 - 2020

Lower Shoal 1 January 2016 1 Hiker Ed S - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Spent a very good night here. 34° this morning. Came in from Helflin (FS500), going to Laurel Shelter tonight and out to Rabbittown Road the next day. Happy New Year!✝
Laurel 2 January 2016 1 Hiker Ed S Jacksonville, Al Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Another good night in the shelter. Onto Rabbittown.
Lower Shoal 16 January 2017 1 Hiker Ed S Jacksonville Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Spent a good night here with a boy scout tent village nearby. Low 46°.

Laurel 2 January 2016 2 Hikers Tina / Dozing Doe, Coleman / Rolling Rock - 2½ Days Pinhoti Trail
Hiking from Coleman Lake Parking southward on Pinhoti Trail. Not sure of endpoint. Only hiking 2½ days. Next stop, Sweetwater Lake & possibly tomorrow Pine Glen. Then, hike out tomorrow.
3 January 2016. After hiking on towards Pine Glen, turned back by flooded trail by Sweetwater Lake. Flooding at points was several feet deep. Cross country rough with lots of underbrush. Climbed to top of ridge for less underbrush to clearcut area. Decided to take higher route back to Laurel Shelter for the night. Very cold (~↑ 20s to ↓ 30s) at night. Built large campfire. Plenty of wood up big hill to east of shelter, so you have to work for it. (Best wood is on very top where there has been a clearcutting.)
PS I slept well in shelter (with plenty of layers of clothes.) Coleman was too cold & had to retreat to our emergency shelter... A tent we had set up, just in case.

Blue Mtn 20 February 2016 1 Hiker HJ Brown Mt Juliet, Tn Day Pinhoti Trail
Saturday. The Pinhoti is the best kept secret in the backpacking world! My thanks to all the trail maintainers. I will continue on my retirement party.
PS Mike & Kelly, I REALLY enjoyed meeting you and sharing tales. Best of luck. I don't do Facebook, but my wife does.
Laurel 24 February 2016 1 Hiker HJ Brown Mt Juliet, Tn Many Pinhoti Trail
Hiked here from Lower Shoal Shelter, where I spent last night in solitude. Had to bushwhack a few times, as the trail was underwater. Also, 4 boots off fords today. The sun peeked out a couple of times, but not for long. I love the sounds here - water, wind, and bird song. Very Peaceful.
Hello to John Calhoun, as well as Mike and Kelly. (I'm assuming you are south of me, as I didn't see an entry in this or Shoal logbook.)
My retirement party marches on!
Choccolocco 25 February 2016 1 Hiker HJ Brown Mt Juliet, TN & Randolph Co, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
What a great day for a hike. I loved seeing a significant amount of sun for the first time since last Friday. The trail is drying out. I love the variation from Laurel to here. Saw 3 wild turkeys, but that was all the wildlife. I was hoping to see the wily red cockaded woodpecker, but I didn't see or hear one. Chipmunk Canyon is beautiful, especially in the sunshine.
Thanks to Mother Nature's Son and all trail maintainers - May God bless you all. Hello to Mike & Kelly - Keep hiking your hike.

Dugger Mtn 26 February 2016 1 Hiker HJ Brown Mt Juliet, Tn Day Pinhoti Trail
Friday. 14:00pm. Just stopped in for a rest; heading on north. What a glorious, sunny day! The Dugger Mountain Wilderness is a spectacular, well kept secret. I still haven't seen any other hikers since Saturday night. Coming down Dugger Mountain I saw my first Pinhoti skunk. Nearly had a Close Encounter of the Smelly Kind, but luckily she didn't spray. Saw my first wildflowers today, too. Spring must be near. No bear sightings yet (That's for you, Kelly.)
Oakey Mtn 27 February 2016 1 Hiker HJ Brown Mt Juliet, Tn Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Spent the night on the dam at Terrapin Watershed. Heavy frost this morning. Decided to hike here for breakfast. Saw 4 hikers late yesterday afternoon. First since last Saturday night. After breakfast I plan to get on northwards with my retirement party. Rudolph Co, Alabama native.

Lower Shoal 14 March 2016 1 Hiker Blue Bog - Many Eastern Continental Trail
Terrible and rainy last night under my tarp shelter. These things are not great for bad weather. Glad to have made it down to this shelter tonight to let everything dry out. Pressing forward to the AT and then to Maine! Peace
Choccolocco 16 March 2016 1 Hiker Blue Bog / Dances with snakes! - Day Pinhoti Trail
Blue Bog passing thru. Saw a Cottonmouth on the wall, 3 feet long, above the shelf with this journal. I tried to kill it, but it escaped! BE CAREFULL!! NO JOKING HERE

Lower Shoal 15 March 2016 2 Hikers Reid / Forkless, AP Birmingham, Al Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Hiked out from Hawkins Hollow yesterday to Jackson Chapel, then left Pine Glen at 3:00pm to arrive here by 5:00pm. Only to discover a dozen other hikers at the shelter. Luckily they were kind enough to allow us to use the shelter and lent a pen to write this entry.
Dugger Mtn 29 March 2016 2 Hikers Reid / Forkless, Aaron P Birminham, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
Started from Burns Trailhead. Clear skies and delightful breeze. Stayed in shelter last night, got cold. Only wildlife spotted was one danger noodle directly on the tril, in our way. Gently tossed him aside and carried on. Traded one candle for a pack of sunflower seeds.
Blue Mtn 30 March 2016 1 Hiker Reid / Forkless, Aaron P, Trevor P Birmingham, Hoover, Al Day Pinhoti Trail
Hiked from Cheaha State Park. Don't remember that hike being so demanding. A little sad to see that the log book from our previous visit is long gone. Shared the shelter with Geoge and Noah, couldn't have asked for better bunk mates.
PS Left 28 Candles... enjoy.

Trail Magic Lives!
Another glorious day. Did about 15 miles and was hungry. I come down the hill and see this beautiful waterfall - And a shelter by it! And then, in the shelter, is a jar of peanut butter and a bag of bagels. Seriously, who leaves perishable food in a shelter in the woods! I immediately made a sandwich. Then I began to wonder - "Sell By" date of April 7, no bugs, no mold, no rodent already eating them... I ate 2 more anyway. Now I can go directly to Cheaha State Park without having to stop for more food!
Thank You, divine nature

Was planning to dry for an hour and continue on, but a thunderstorm hit & the dog's afraid. Thanks for all the trail work & for the shelter. We much appreciated it!

Perfect shelter! We found the quintessential trail magic here. There was a nice, frosty Mike's Hard Lemonade in the river for our tasting pleasure. Beyond that though, first night of a five day trek to high point Trailhead with some of my buddies. It's nice to be out here. Alabama is cool.

Trail name "Tone Man" (past thru hiker), out with Kason, great nephew, 4 years old. On his first night out in the woods. Set up camp, had supper, then did a night hike (his idea.) He crashed early, but had a good time. He wishes he could stay another night. He wants to go camping again soon.

Thanks to John Calhoun for leaving these here thru the years. It is good entertainment if you are here by yourself.

May God bless you all.

Blue Mtn 12 March 2017 2 Hikers F: Bob & Michael Huntsville, Al 3 Days Pinhoti Trail
Father and son hiking for spring break. We started at Adams Gap Saturday morning. We had not anticipated the rock fields on the way up. It rained much of Saturday and we were only able to make it to Hernandez before dark set & our water was depleted. We had a dry night. But the rain picked up and the temperature dropped. An ice coating met us the next morning, putting a damper on our plans. We decided to hike to the Blue Mountain Shelter, dry our equipment, and take it easy. This shelter is nice. We hiked the AT last October and this place is much nicer / cleaner. Monday it is back to Adams Gap.

Choccolocco 1 April 2017 1 Hiker Greenman - Day Pinhoti Trail
First hike of the season. Coleman to Burns and it was a great day! Surprisingly I haven't seen much wildlife, as I normally always see so many critters on the Pinhoti, but day's not over yet. I believe this to be my 6th time doing this section and believe it to be one of the best of the stretch.
Heading north out of here follows the creek and are some choice little swimming holes to cool off in. I met a wierd looking fella up that way. Said his name was "PickleBoots," he didn't say much but shared some crackers and a fart with me. Seemed harmless enough other than the rabid looking possum he was keeping as a pet.

Laurel 3 April 2017 12 Hikers Troop 430: Beverly, Donnel C Roswell, Ga 4 Nights Pinhoti Trail
10 boy scouts and 2 adult leaders stayed the night at Laurel Shelter. We are doing a training hike (Sections 9 & 10 on the Pinhoti Trail) (April 2-6th). We will be embarking on a high adventure this summer hiking approximately 70-90 miles in northern New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. Our last 2 training hikes were on the AT. We chose to go somewhere different that offered variety of terrain other than the straight up & down we found on the AT. Also, the AT is heavily traversed especially sinceit is spring break in Georgia for our area. We have seen one other person. This trail is a beautiful hike. We stayed at Lower Shoal Shelter last night and now this shelter. Both offered amazing views. We are having an amazing time!
Choccolocco 5 April 2017 12 Hikers Troop 430: Beverly C Roswell, Ga 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
2 Scoutmasters and 10 boy scouts from Troop 430 Roswell, Ga stayed the night down on the levee by the water. Woke up at 06:00 hours and packed way on up to sheleter before raging thunderstorm hit with hail. We are on a 4 day training hike for our summer hike at Philmont Scout Ranch. We have hiked from Trailhead of Section 9 and are taking out at end of Section 10. Warning for any going southbound from here... There is a huge tree that has fallen over on the hillside and is laying across a section of the switchback. We had to hand packs over and shimmy over the tree that is hanging over the dropoff. Lots of work. Other spots on the switchbacks where trees have fallen over and taken out part of the trail. Watch your step! This has been a good strenuous hike for training. Enjoyed the terrain better than the AT. Beautiful place. Troop 430 ASM Beverly C
Choccolocco 5 April 2017 1 Hiker Troop 430: Mr. Tumms Roswell, Ga 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
Mr. Tumms from Troop 430 here. Last night I heard something heavy circling our tents. Didn't sound like a bear, plus it didn't go for the food wrapper someone left out. Sounded like human-ish walking pattern, but all the other guys say they weren't outside around then, around 5-5:30ish. Might have been bigfoot. Whatever it was, it circled Papa Smurf & Rayquarts tent for about ten minutes. I wonder if bigfoot's feet hurt as much as mine after hiking all day!
Choccolocco 5 April 2017 1 Hiker Troop 430? Roswell, Ga 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
This is the 3rd day hiking thru the PT. In the wee hours of this morning a siren went off for the incoming storm. In my half asleep / dreaming mind, I thought it was marking the death of someone important. Kinda like the "Hunger Games." The siren kept going and I was thinking "Dang, this person must have been very important." Eh. The storm did, and so did hail, but it left after a few minutes.
Choccolocco 5 April 2017 1 Hiker Troop 430: Muddobber Roswell, Ga 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
Muddobber here. Calling in from the training hike on day 4. Lost my compass and broke my sunglasses on the first day. Not fun. But it was fun being a "naviguesser" and camping for 4 days. But I'm ready to go home. P/U I smell.
Choccolocco 5 April 2017 1 Hiker Troop 430 Roswell, Ga 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
8:09. We were sitting on a forest service road and myself, "Papa Smurf", and I was getting the logging trucks to honk and one slowed down and said "I don't have a horn." It was funny. Enjoy your days on the trail. Still looking for the bigfoot and Starla. Leaving Gold Bond for your tired feet.
Choccolocco 5 April 2017 1 Hiker Troop 430 Roswell, Ga 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
Unfortunately, I do not have a trail name for I am lame. To be honest, I don't know how I'll do Philmont (12 days) because this is our 4th and last day and I am DONE. But alas, we go on, do we not? We do. I hope you all have a swell day & evening. You deserve it... unless you don't. Starla & Thomas decided to stop by & say hi. They're doing well. Anywho, Buongiorno, Buonagera, Buonanotte.
Choccolocco 5 April 2017 1 Hiker Troop 430: Goldilocks Roswell, Ga 4 Days Pinhoti Trail
Bug Goldilocks - To my sadness, that is my trail name. Sadly, my patrol does not want to sing songs during a huge thunderstorm to keep moral high. Instead, 5am waiting for water to boil. That tree yesterday was a pain. Hunter Bug (Rip Van Winkle) is sleeping while everyone else is working!! He just woke up, and he hates "Hunter Bug!" If he reads this I'll be punched. It will be worth it to have this record of that nickname.

Green Man Great on the Pinhoti. Doing Pine Glen to Coleman. Hiked last weekend to Burns. So far no sign of "Pickleboots", although did see a huge frog disguised as a pile of poo and a huge black snake! This section makes 16 miles this year and next weekend doing Dugger. Expect all long 12 mile of just steep side mountain stretch of no water 'til it comes down to Terrapin. If you have to poop get a big flat rock then throw it off the mountain afterwards or do an ape hanger! Happy Trails!

Was here 26 April 2014 on hike from Pinky Burns to Cheaha!
I had a dream here 2014 about my brother Pyro (Eddie W.) He had a crash in a SUV. I told him to be careful when we get back home. 3 Days after we got home he rolled a friends SUV!
2 weeks ago I had another dream about a car wreck. Eddie was to come back up here with me but he was with his daughter and they got T boned in her new car and Eddie is in bad shape again?
They're both OK but Eddie is out of hiking for a long time now. No dream tonight.

He was going to come up with me when he was (T Boned.) This is the last shelter for me to have stayed the night on the Pinhoti system. This is close match to Lower Shoal Shelter. Good Times and Snakes
Got here last night around 6 and immediately started exploring the water. Snake. Bucket and myself (Smiley) came upon a surprising sight and many others. At the end of the night, the list of wildlife in the creek had composed of glowing sucker fish, crawfish, baby salamanders, frogs and 2 snakes, which is where Ethan got his nickname. He caught it by hand. Wildlife, deep talks next to a fire, and sleeping next to running water... 'nough said.

Oh and don't mess with the boot, it's got baby birds in it!!!

Till next time

Dugger Mtn 30 April 2017 5 Hikers Huntress & the Boys, Venus & Husband, 2 dogs - Overnight Pinhoti Trail
Huntress here. Decided to brin my 2 sons up for a short overnight hike. Venus and her husband came with us. The shelter was clean and there was a small amount of firewood ready for us. We brought out dachshund Ginny (the fearless one) and our wolfdog Shade (Protector of the Furless). This last day in April is a nice one. It's about 77° and windy. Overcast, but no rain. We are going to Colorado in July and doing some smaller trips to work up to it. The boys enjoyed collecting firewood for the next hiker to pass through. We met 2 hikers from Birmingham out for an overnight trip as well. Hoping to be back while the weather is still this mild. Might be another Wander Woman trip in the making. If you are a woman lokking for other women to hike with, look up our group on Facebook. We are Wander Women. Enjoyed the great outdoors. Love bringing my family to this shelter. It's a nice getaway. About to return to civilization. Live long and prosper y'all. Have a great trip.

Grrrr
The plan was to do 30.N.3 with the Oakey Mountain Shelter being by base camp. I started at Section 12 Highpoint Trailhead. Hiked south to Oakey Shelter. Stayed the night. I struck camp, leaving nothing, & hiked something over 5 miles south. Well, I only got to Terrapin Creek Watershed, but with the back tracking from getting turned around at what I think was Oakey Mountain Crossing out and back to Oakey Mountain Shelter turned out to be 9.8 total. So I set up camp for the night & had dinner. This morning I am ready for the 10 mile back to the car at Highpoint. This was a great trip. By myself the whole way. I look forward to doing it again in the late fall / early winter for the views.

Wonderful hostel! The people are pretty all right, too. ☺ Talladega is a cute town with a couple (real close) coffee shops, grocery store/CVS?post office next to the hostel, and a Walmart a ways down the road (We've walked there, too) if you want.

We're on our way N from Flagg Mountain, will connect to the Benton MacKaye in Georgia, then up the AT as far north as weather allows. My brother just said "I might leave you at Springer... Do you think there's a way I can stop back at Talladega on my way back?" You reading this Speedo/Grunt? "It was like a second home." Yeah, yeah, brotherski... You only say that because it's rained our past 7 trail days.

After rain for every day we hiked for the past 5 days, it was pleasant to not have all out gear soaked when we woke up in the morning. It was ESPECIALLY nice that we had just washed all our stuff the night before at the hostel, and it didn't get soaked. Hooray for dry socks!

Would have gone farther... but this shelter was too nice. Thanks, John!!

Laurel 20 June 2017 1 Hiker Ed not Milkman - 3 Nights Pinhoti Trail
Ed not Milkman here for a breat on a 3 night section from Pine Glen north. Forest is lush with greenery after controlled burns and good rain this June. Saw a coyote and a deer this morning. Nice wildflowers too, and a few early blackberries ripe. 1 single ripe blueberry. Most common flower now are golden coreopsis, white toadflax, purple milkwort (looks like clover) and other ragworts, unknown indigo plant with large pale blue flowers, and a spindly purple flowered stalk in pea family with almost no leaves.
Laurel 20 June 2017 1 Hiker Rev Lostboy - 3 Nights Pinhoti Trail
Started @ Pine Glen northbound. Probably 3 nights? Today I flushed a big group of turkeys just before the lake (south of the lake). Great morning to be out. Started at 500 Ranger Station and had a nice hike partially in the dark. I love wearing a headlamp to hike & see all the glowing spider eyes reflecting back & watching them move as I get close. The ground is covered with hundreds of spiders & you never know it. When I came upon several deer - We frightened one another. Several downed trees along the way. Thanks John for keeping such a nice shelter in order. B

On a thru hike of the Alabama section of the Pinhoti. Started Friday 23 February 2018 at Flagg Mountain... Met with Sunny "Nimblewill Nomad". He's a cool guy - Triple Crown Hiker - for those that don't know him. Have had a great hike so far despite the rain. I even got to hike the new section near Flagg - called Terrapin Hill. It still needs some work, bu we have some great volunteers who are taking care of it. On I go to the end of this journey - Jackson Chapel Road in Georgia. (86 miles down, 93 to go *)

Dugger Mtn 1 March 2018 1 Hiker Birdfoot, Birdfoot's Ego - Day Pinhoti Trail
6:30pm. End of day 4. FKT attempt took a major hit today. 31 miles in 13 hours. When I saw the shelter sign, it felt like a donkey kick. It rained all day and the creek crossings were endless, but I kept my head down all day long. 31 miles? Really? I pulled up here for the day rather than spending several more hours slogging to Oakey. I hope a few hours of sleep revives my spirit. It's on the mat, struggling to get up, looking for its mouthpiece. - Birdfoot
PS GPS had me at 3mph pace. Anyone else think the databook is off? Birdfoot's Ego

Pinhoti Through. Love this trail!! Perfect blazing. True single track. Not overimproved or overengineered. Very little erosion. Like the path in the woods Benton MacKaye envisioned for the now river corridor known as AT. Have hiked AT, Benton MacKaye, Sheltowee, Cumberland, Smokies 900, & other and this is my favorite as far as natural & professionally yet forest minded maintenance. Love it!

Blue Mtn 27 March 2018 2 Hikers Gangster Grizzly Greenman, Shane / HAIRNT - Many Pinhoti Trail
Doing about 24 miles from Adams Gap to County Road 24. Coming up from Adams is by far the hardest hike of the entire length of the Pinhoti but very rewarding with Caney Head "Dragons Backbone", McDills Point & plane crash site! Also did lake trail. It's brutal but you can hike halfway down from top & back to see Chief Cheaha Face on side of mountain. Very cool.
I would like to mention 3 of my close friends on this day as I begin my 2018 hiking season! Russell "Mala" Forsyth hiked all over country but best known for doing trail magic all the way to Maine on the AT for about 15 years. "Baltimore Jack" Tarlin - Legendary hiker known worldwide for his incredible character! Also "Otto" Douglas, AT hiker but best known for probably 1000 hours of volunteer trail work all over the country, most extensive work with Tennessee Eastman Corps with Bob Peoples!
Those guys are forever in my heart and always on my mind. Much love always buds!
This hike gets my little buddy Shane up to 82 miles of the Pinhoti and we conquered Cheaha! Back to Rabbittown Road for Dugger northbound now!
Hope everyone has a great hiking season this year! Happy Trails.
Blue Mtn 27 March 2018 1 Hiker Dova T - Many Pinhoti Trail
Aye, this is Dova T. I've been hiking a 24 mile from Adams Gap to County Road 24. This is my first hiking trip but thanks to Greenman for bringing me. It's been great. And for any Skyrim players who read this may the Divines guide you.
Blue Mtn 27 March 2018 1 Hiker Ulfhednar / Ulf - Day Pinhoti Trail
I've been out on the trail with Grizzly Greenman and Dova T on a 24 mile hike. We started out at Adams Gap and are goingto CR24. It's been a rough two days. The wind was howling. Blew off Greenmans tent. Me and Dova had to share a tent. Barely made it through the night the next morning. We had a fire the night before but it was gone by morning. Freezing to death with nothing to warm us up. We hiked up Lake View Trail back to the trail crossing. Got some coffee at the store and carried on freezing. A hell of a lot better now!
In rallolha we trust

Blue Mtn 27 March 2018 2 Hikers F: Carl, Stewart - Many Pinhoti Trail
Spring break 2018: My son and I are hiking the Pinhoti from Flagg to 431. Decided to stay the night here because it is such a nice shelter and we have put in some really BIG mileage days to get here. We stayed at McDill's Overlook last night so this is a really short day of rest. We also had a town day in Oxford. Getting off the trail tomorrow at 431 and headed home for Easter. We will finish the Alabama section this summer and eventually catching the Benton MacKaye over to Springer.

Wow, what a day. Not a drop of rain yet my feet were wet from the moment I left the last shelter, this morning until now. The trail is so flooded out, Crazy! Took me almost an hour to go the first half mile north of CR531. Had to do a ton of bushwhacking to get around the water that swamped the trail. Tried walking through some of the flood (up to my waist at one point.) Anyway, 11 miles in 9 hours. Glad I'm not in a rush. Glad for this shelter. Pat L

Spent the night, very nice. Rain got me 10 minutes out from the shelter. I agree with Space Jam about the shelter. On to the next shelter. Happy trails.

Blue Mtn 24 May 2019 1 Hiker Buena Ben! - Many Pinhoti Trail
After a great nero at Cheaha, I'm going to do another here. I'm slow but sure. Great hike so far. Shelter is nice but I'm going to camp on one of the pads. It's hot inside there to me. Going to dry out clothes, reconfigure some equipment. Head out tomorrow to Heflin. Thanks to Kay and all at Cheaha State Park. An amazing experience! ?? those girls and guys. Took such great care of me. By the way, I'm still looking for this Swedish Bikini Team & some Old Milwaukee! Thanks.
Laurel 15 June 2019 1 Hiker Bwann Ben - Day Pinhoti Trail
Bwann Ben has arrived! Regret not s?ing Golden Lake & the campgroun. I wanted to go there and recharge my phone. I may have enough for the next section until out of Heart of Dixie, but not sure. Got to check directions and decide if I want to go back. I will probably push ahead. Doubt there is service until Geargia. Great shelter. The chairs called to me. NOBO Flagg / Springer
PS Oops! My bad. The guys las night I thought were calling it "Golden Lake" when it was actually "Coleman Lake". It's in 4 miles. I'll hit it manana! The trail provides.
PPS I'm ready for the Swedish Bikini Team & that case of Old Milwaukee Beer! It doesn't get any better than this!! (Except for the ticks.)
Dugger Mtn 20 June 2019 1 Hiker Bwana Ben - Many Eastern Continental Trail
The dreaded Dugger Wilderness wasn't as bad as others make out. Coming in to Cheaha was much tougher. Plus I found blackberries.

Blue Mtn 29 May 2019 2 Hikers Helen / Trip, Mike / Slowpoke - Many Pinhoti Trail
Inspire → We had to skip a few sections due to the heat / water shortage. I / Helen will be going off trail in a few days due to me forgetting I had school assignments due. Mike will be going for a few more days. So ⇒ Have a good hike! I will come back to finish this one day! Here is a drawing to inspire, I guess.
