I borrowed this log book from John Calhoun. This 8" x 5" wirebound book has a black front and unbleached cardboard back covers. There are no loose pages and little water damage.

As a guy studying many logbooks, I have to disagree with a request above. Please do not write on both sides of pages. Reading these books is tough enough without text showing through from the other side.
Thanks!
Dan

Fish Cloudy. Temperature is, I'll say, mid / low 60°F. Slept last night at North Dugger Mountain Shelter... Heading north, between Choccolocco and Dugger Mountain Shelter. I lost a camo sleeping bag cover on the hike down Dugger probably. So enjoy if you find it! Just eating lunch and passing through.
4 December 2013 1 Hiker Tom aka Ragadash - Day Pinhoti Trail
Cloudy and raining, but warm with my five. This is my first night of what will hopefully be a 9 day trek thru the Pinhoti. Bats flew around the shelter most of the night. Thank you for the dry wood. It really helped.
- December 2013 1 Hiker - - Day Pinhoti Trail
And I have felt a presence that disturbs me with the joy of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime of something far more deeply interfused, whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, and the round ocean and the living air, and the blue sky, and in the mind of man; a motion and a spirit, that impels all thinking things, all objects of thought, and rolls through all things.

Therefore am I still a lover of the meadows and the woods, and mountains; and of all that we behold from this green earth; of all the mighty world of eye, and ear, - both what they half create, and what perceive; well pleased to recognize in nature and the language of the sense, the anchor of my purest thoughts, the nurse, the guide, the guardian of my heart, and soul of all my moral being. 21 December 2013 1 Hiker Robert - 2 Nights Pinhoti Trail
Today is the first day of winter. The air, however, sure did fool me today. It was 75° today. Misty most of the day. This evening is supposed to bring severe thunderstorms and tomorrow it will rain all day. My dog Lou and I might just take tomorrow off and take a shelter day. He likes those days? He gets to eat all day. Who wouldn't like that.
We are just on the trail until Christmas. The dog and I must see the family but I thought it would drive me insane if I saw one more "Big Sale" commercial.
So here we are.
Good luck to you all.
Lou and I love you!!

22 December 2013 1 Hiker Lou Dog and Robert - 2 Nights Pinhoti Trail
Awesome! And I'm not talking about the weather. Someone left a hawk feather pen. Feels right on! Today has rained every hour of itself. No worries though, we hung out in the shelter all day, smoked, and played games for treats. Lou likes treats. The water sources are over the top, and I mean literally. There are little rivers everywhere over the top of this range. So we stayed 2 nights, had fun and won't forget it. Our Christmas gift to one another. The gift of explorations. By the way the bats freaked me out until I figured out what the noise was. As Lou would say... Be good.

11:36am Thursday. Started on Pinhoti near Piedmont. Headed to I20 to be picked up by my wife Sunday afternoon. In total it's a 54 mile trip. I started in Piedmont yesterday at 5:30pm heading this way. Nice hike. Decent climbs. Trail is marked OK.

We welcomed the sun with the ritualistic 108 sun salutaions. The cold night fell off us like leaves in the fall. Three tents. one hammock. Countless releases of urine and one trek with a shovel later, we were packing up.
- In all seriousness, the shelter was very much appreciated. Stayed the night en route from High Point Trailhead 278 to Burns - Sections 1 & 2. Be back for the next soon.
Thanks!!

We are 151 miles into our 2584 mile hike to Mount Katahdin, Maine. We did a 17 mile day from Choccolocco Shelter and trail was riddled with downed trees. The weather was amazing, mid 70s I guess. That is hot when you're hiking up Oakey Mountain. This trail is challenging us in many different ways. Received trail magic form Buddy L today of snacks and Mt Dew. Yummmm. Time for sleep.

Greetings,
So good to be here and out on the trail again. I had not been able to do much hiking for the last couple of years due to much illness in my family. Awesome to see someone found a hawk feather pen here. I have always called this spot "Hawk Feather Ridge" since finding a feather here many years ago, before this shelter was built. I just saw a Summer Tannager from where I sit. We saw a Scarlet Tannager last week. Anyway, I'm just out for a short afternoon hike and am enjoying the silence & solitude. Thanks "Preacherman" for leaving the good book. I am currently reading through the Gospel of John. No better place to read this book! Also, thanks to John Calhoun and his crew for keeping this trail "alive."
Happy Hiking

Hiked here from Chief Ladiga Campground. Nice hot showers. About 1.6 miles north on Pinhoti Trail (just left of mile marker 7 on paved bike trail). Good place to freshen up! We decided to hike back with backpacks & rough it after months in RV. A night, fire cooking dinner / breakfast just wonderful! We have been retired for 2 years now and found this quote from Arctic Dreams: "We pursue a desire for equilibrium and hormony between out familiar places and unknown spaces." (American Geographer Yi-Fu Tuan). It is a nice way to live.

29 October 2014 1 Hiker Tyler - 5 Days Pinhoti Trail
I made the short trek from North Dugger Shelter to here this morning. It was an awesome hike! It rained all last night and this morning, so everytime the wind blew the leaves, I got a little wet. It was a misty, foggy morning. Especially on top & around Mt Oakey. It was beautiful, though. My journey on the Pinhoti started around the train tracks at Shoal Creek. It has taken me 5 days to get here and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Someone is picking me up Friday morning and I will hate to leave this beautiful trail. At the start of the trek I wrote Psalm 23 in my notebook and have been memorizing it along the trail, so I shall leave y'all with it.
Psalm 23
"The Lord is my shepard, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of rightiousness for his name's sake. Even thoug I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me: your rod & your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You annoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the lord forever."

Monday. Northbound. Started on the 8th of October from Jacksonville, Florida. Hiked the Florida Trail from Olustee Historical State Park across the Panhandle 518 miles.
Turning northward on the Blackwater River State Park spur trail to cross the Florida / Alabama State Line just west of Conecuh State Park.
Then about 170 miles of road walks brought me to Flagg Mountain and the newest & most southern section of the Alabama Pinhoti Trail. That section ends just west of Weogufka, Al, & another road walk is needed to connect to the Trammel Trailhead. From there to here has been by forest trail.
Hope to cross the Alabama / Georgia state line later this week to connect onto the Georgia Pinhoti Trail & the Benton MacKaye Trail to reach the Appalachian Trail by the 10th of January '95.

We started biking the Chief Ladiga Trail in Anniston @ 17:15 yesterday and arrived at the shelter around 22:30. Stashed the bikes at mile 7 of Ladiga and hiked with 10 pound can of ravioli up the Pinhoti. Enjoyed a delicious breakfast of coffee, blueberry cake, and raw potato. Temps were down to 27° F last night but the shelter was nice and cozy. The mid morning sun has us sweating at 40°F.

"The clouds that gather round the setting sun do take a somber colouring from an eye that hath kept watch o'er man's mortality; Another race hath been, and other palms are won. Trying to do a 29 mile day hike from N FS500 (Dugger Mt Rd) to Jackson Chapel today. It is hot already. 95° will be the high. Perhaps I should have thought twice about this hike. But Yoda comes to mind: "Try not. Do or do not. There is no try!" So let's get it done.

12 May 2017 1 Hiker LJ The Marine - 2 Nights Pinhoti Trail
Grrrr
The plan was to do 30.N.3 with the Oakey Mountain Shelter being by base camp. I started at Section 12 Highpoint Trailhead. Hiked south to Oakey Shelter. Stayed the night. I struck camp, leaving nothing, & hiked something over 5 miles south. Well, I only got to Terrapin Creek Watershed, but with the back tracking from getting turned around at what I think was Oakey Mountain Crossing out and back to Oakey Mountain Shelter turned out to be 9.8 total. So I set up camp for the night & had dinner. This morning I am ready for the 10 mile back to the car at Highpoint. This was a great trip. By myself the whole way. I look forward to doing it again in the late fall / early winter for the views.
